This is one of my mom's foolproof recipes that she made for company when I was growing up.
I don't know if she found it in recipe book or it was given to her by a friend. Heck, I don't even know if that's the original name, but it's what my family has always called it.
My apologies for the handwriting, but I must have been in a hurry when I wrote it 20 years ago, so if you can't read it, please let me know :)
I only changed two things. I use Olive Oil instead of vegetable (it didn't change the flavor one bit) and I shred my own cheese. It uses about two cups for two steaks.

This recipe can be doubled or tripled. Just make sure they'll fit in the bag.
Here's all the ingredients, mixed and ready to go:
Make sure you have thick steaks or you'll need to adjust the time by 5 minutes less on each cooking time.
The paper grocery sack is ready to go:

Now to seal the bag....
My mom always used staples, but I found out that paperclips work just as well.
Now it's time for the mushrooms.
Just a little dab of the butter mix....
and then topped with the cheese mixture.
I put a little water or chicken broth, and wine in the bottom. Sometimes it's red wine and sometimes it's white.
Because I only have one oven, I usually cook the mushrooms ahead of time and then heat them up while I let the steak rest for a bit.
Here's the finished result with mashed potatoes:

DeleteWow!! I thought I was a pretty savvy cook but this is out of this world! I'm always looking for new things to try and the whole paper bag thing is awesome. Next time I'm at the grocery store and they ask, "Paper or plastic?", I know what to say. I think I have everything else.

My mom used to bake apple pie in a paper bag. My husband (then boyfriend ) thought she was crazy...major fire hazard, he said. We used to laugh at him, because my mom did it all the time, until one Thanksgiving the bag caught fire. It was ok, we put it out quickly, but I've never heard of anyone else doing that! Ps...I have the same recipe cards and box!!
