My exciting Saturday

So last Saturday, I decided it would be a good time to defrost the fridge.

Why not?

It had been something like 6 months.

Bad, bad, rue.

As you can see temperatures were going to be hot...

At that point it was early in the morning and it was already 70 something.

Have I mentioned that this heatwave is killing me?

It ended up being 100 that day.

That "new to me" barometer is from a little thrifting adventure I had :)

I don't know what the little gold dial is for, but I'm using it as a wishing bar.

I set it to rain ;)

Anyway, I cleared out the fridge and my kitchen was a disaster zone.

As you can see, I need to do this more often...

Obviously.

Don't judge me.

About 8 hours later it looked like this...

Some of the ice cube trays were still in the cooler, so I could have some ice for a cocktail, after I finished.

After 8 hours of looking at my kitchen like that, I needed one.

Here it is with the food back in it...

Exciting stuff right there.

So now it's all clean and humming away :)

Oh! And I got a new tablecloth while I was out thrifting too :)

It wasn't my usual colors, but I think it works and besides, it was only $14.

Yay me! :)

I'm sure your Saturday had to been more exciting than mine, but at least I got one chore done that I had neglected for far too long.

Now I need to clean out my closet.

It's scary in there!

  1. Ha, what a Saturday! We have a "frost free" freezer, but it certainly isn't frost free! We have to defrost it every so often, and it is such a messy job. I commiserated with you as you worked :) But, it feels so nice to have the job done! Enjoyed your humorous recap of the day's adventure :)

  2. When I was first married I had that exact fridge- oh how I hated defrosting day. Yours looked better than mine when I let it go too long - two babies, sick mother, full time job and going to college...........ah yes, happy days, heh.

Your fridge is perfect in your era home. Love it. Wasn't that a nice cool job on a hot hot day?

Like your new treasure tablecloth too!

  3. I just love your vintage fridge! It is so neat! I have a couple vintage tablecloths and just love them. I think what I love most about vintage linens is the feel of them and the faded colors. So pretty! Hugs!

  4. Oh Rue, I need to defrost our freezer, too! I put some things in it, earlier, and could barely get the door closed. Our freezer is out in my husband's shop and it is hot in there so the defrosting shouldn't take long, for me. I love your new tablecloth!

    Grace & Peace.

  7. I may have fridge envy... LOL! I love that cute thing! My fridge needs to be deep cleaned, desperately. I'm working on my office right now, and other things are getting neglected.... Once I finish one thing, I have to tackle another! haha!

  8. You are such a brave woman! I would have been drinking the entire time I was defrosting that freezer! Love the new tablecloth! And your fridge...even though it has to have special cleaning on occasion! :-) Hugs!!

  9. That is a fantastic ice box. They weren't made to be efficient though. I remember the ice in our freezer as a kid. Kinda neat to see again.

  10. Is that tart red cherries preserves I spot in the fridge shelf? If so, if you haven't already, add them to a bottle of any BBQ sauce, and a bag of Costco meatballs to your crockpot, cook all day, and thank me later. ;)

  11. Reminds me of defrosting ours when I was a teen. Ours had a huge handle/lever you pulled on to open it, kinda wish I had it now. Love the new table cloth!

  12. Oh my gosh, does seeing that picture of the freezer bring back memories. YIKES! I do love a frost free freezer in the fridge. I NEED to clean out my fridge too, I think you've given me some inspiration to do so. It will make me feel good, and after the clean out, that evening, I just might have a margarita to celebrate. :-)

Have a great day ~ FlowerLady

  14. KUDOS! I have been emptying closets. It is an uphill battle, but I think I may be at the half way point! Doesn't it feel good to mark things off your list!

  15. Heh-heh, you're so funny, Rue. Hey, I LOVE seeing a fridge get a fresh start. One of those things that makes you sigh contentedly when it's all done. I'm sure you looked in there and admired it a few times, right? That's what I would do. Your fridge is so cute! Perfect with your metal ice trays. A good Saturday activity.

  16. Please read up on setting your barometer. It is great fun, to use one. I set mine every night, and next morning, I see 'what's coming'. ,-)

You did a lot of work! But the accomplishment is super too!!!!

  20. That used to be the worst job, ever! I am so thankful for my frost free fridge and freezer! Love your new vintage tablecloth.
    Have a great week, Rue.

  21. I love your refrigerator! Isn't it amazing how long old appliances last compared to new ones. When we first moved into our home, we bought a new refrigerator and it went out within a month and they had to replace it. Our first washer and dryer lasted a good 30 years.

  22. I too just cleaned out my fridge! It's been awhile since I've had to defrost a freezer though. :)

    Love the new tablecloth.
I wanted to invite you to stop by the Decor To Adore blog as I am currently hosting a giveaway for my treasured readers.

    Have a beautiful day!

  23. Hi Rue! Oh, what a cute fridge you have. Now I do remember having to defrost. I've taken a hairdryer to a freezer quite a few times! :) Your fridge looks so neat and organized! You've reminded me I need to clean out mine but shoot I'm sitting in my chair instead! :)
    Be a sweetie,

    1. Shelia,
The blowdryer is how I defrosted mine when I had one similar to Rue's. Although mine was not as cute as hers! I'll be cleaning out mine tomorrow eve, just before the weekend. Seems like more things end up there then!
      Have a great weekend all.

  25. Fortunately my fridge/freezer is frost free but the overflow freezer outside is not and starting to need defrosting. Not looking forward to that. We spent our Saturday painting the new shed. At least you were inside!

  26. Your vintage fridge is so cool but I totally forgot that those things need to be defrosted! That would totally be a deal breaker for me; I can't even stand to just clean out fridge! I know, I know...we're all different. I guess it's a good thing I married a guy who doesn't mind helping me clean out the fridge otherwise, admittedly, it'd probably never get done. So - did you get to enjoy a cocktail afterwards? You certainly deserved one (or two), that's for sure! Love your new tablecloth...just gorgeous. And that barometer is awesome.

  27. Oh I battle with myself sometimes this way. Eventually, I remember that getting started is most of the problem. Refrigerators used to have such nice colors. I'm noticing the beautiful shade of aqua. Hope that you get some rain in your corner. I can't imagine how miserable heat without rain would be.

  28. Hi Rue, I need to clean my fridge again too and you have inspired me to take it on maybe this Saturday. It seems like a weekend project anyway. Love your fridge and it looks so good and organized. Pretty tablecloth too.

  29. Defrosting, eh? Well, it certainly paid off and besides a walk on the beach, I was in the car taking kids to their friends' and back. At least you accomplished something tangible. I'd like a wishing bar.

  30. Your fridge is cute as a button and I'd love one just like it, but only if I could call you to defrost it. ;)

  31. That is a chore I well remember and am thankful not to have to do anymore. But you sure make it fun and attractive, Rue. There's something so thriftily satisfying about it, I remember. I always did the dreaded job the morning after we'd used up as many of the leftovers as possible.

  32. I would defrost a fridge if I could have a door within a door like you have on your freezer. I have a cheap apartment fridge, but it does the job for now. When next I have to ever buy one, I'm looking for one like yours.

  33. Rue,
Cutest fridge ever!! I remember Momma boiling water and placing it in the freezer, then getting a knife and chipping away the ice-I love that memory of my cute little Momma:) she was so fastidious, a perfect combination of just about everything.
Glad your fridge is all neat and nice now.

  38. Hi Rue,
I'm a little bit slow on the draw but want you to know that I love this post!! and am amazed that you have a fridge that old that still runs! It makes me so nostalgic....When I was first married, I cleaned and defrosted it every week.....(like that would happen now!! LOL) You've done a wonderful job with the retro look.....I'm crazy about your sink! Happy Gardening!

  39. Boy oh boy, Rue, you really brought back some memories. I grew up with a fridge like yours and vividly remember Mom defrosting it. What a piece of work! Lucky me, I was never allowed in "her" kitchen so I never had to defrost. However, she did often hand me the can of Pledge from beneath the sink to dust the entire house. To this day I'm an ace duster. I love your blog.

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
