So, I bought a new (to me) lamp from the 1930s to go in my living room.
The other one wasn't working as far as looks go, but it takes me forever to find a great lamp.
It's one of those things I'm really indecisive about and I have no idea why.
So here it is all set up...
When I saw it in the picture on Etsy, the shade looked okay, but when I got it in the mail, it looked kind of odd.
Too Victorian maybe?
Too big?
I know it isn't original to the lamp.
Anyway, I love the lamp itself and I think it goes really well in there, but what do you think?
Should I get a different shade?
Maybe something darker like the one on the other end of my couch?
Something less frou frou or girly?
Inquiring minds want to know ;)

PS
Still catching up.
I'll get there if it kills me ;)
Hey Rue!
ReplyDeleteI actually think the lampshade looks perfect with your base and just wonderful in your living room. Maybe I've been absent but I don't remember seeing more than your kitchen. This room is just beautiful and really expresses you and your taste and style. Also scrolled own to your last post---lovely dining room!! Keep it up girl---I don't think you need our opinions, you are doing great in making this home YOU!

Wow, I'm afraid I'm not much help with lamps, Rue. I really don't like shopping for them. I think you're right, though, about the shade being not quite right. It seems like the base (which is GOR-geous by the way), is too dainty for the shade. Would a shade like one of these be better: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/lighting/table-lamps/pair-of-1930s-marble-table-lamps/id-f_1222032/ ???
ReplyDeleteA Jeanie lamp, very beautiful! I think the shade is light enough, not to dark. Kathleen in Az
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kathleen :)

I'd leave it as is, I think it's perfect. Not too big or small, not too light or dark, not frou frou at all to me.
ReplyDeleteI love that lamp! I think I'd try to find a shade that was a little bigger than the shade on the other lamp, but still that same shape.
ReplyDeleteI love that lamp! I think I'd try to find a shade that was a little bigger than the shade on the other lamp, but still that same shape.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the shade is too big. Maybe it looks that way because the other lamp has a much smaller shade?
ReplyDelete(And you're doing a good job catching up, but don't let it kill you). ;)
I think it looks great because it shows off the detailing at the top of the base before the light fitting part! The base is very pretty and looks really at home in your home!! xx
ReplyDeleteI like the base a lot, but I do understand your "problem" with the shade. Maybe a shade in a similar form (the color is fine as it is) as your other lamp?
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great! The shade goes great with the lamp and it doesn't cover the bulb base which is so pretty. It fits good in the spot, not covering the picture behind it. My first impression seeing it was that it went great with the style of the room. But you have to love it, so maybe trying it with a different shade will help decide.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks pretty, but it's really how you feel about it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful lamp but you may want to update the shade. I wouldn't go with darker since the base is dark. Your room looks so warm and inviting!!

I love the lamp, beautiful design. The shade is unique but if you want to change it - go ahead. I looked at the shade now a few times and I do like it.
ReplyDeleteI like the lamp. I think the base is a good size. I like the shade. I am just not sure I like that shade on that lamp. But it still is so much cuter than any of my lamps! And your style is vintage funkiness (I mean that in the nicest way).
ReplyDeleteI love your home, your style, it is all a beautiful expression of you! I do know how you feel about lamps though-I am looking at one of mine right now and I just know that it something is amiss!
ReplyDeleteIt was great hearing from you:)

My personal opinion is I like the lamp. I don't think it needs a different shade, it's perfect as is!
ReplyDeleteI do love the lamp and the shade isn't too bad. Of course, it isn't in my living room, it's in yours! Your house is always adorable, Rue.
ReplyDeleteAnd judging from the other comments, I may be the only one that likes it as is! Haha :)
ReplyDeleteI like it as is because it gives off lots of warm light in your room and I like the pretty painted details on the base. You can always change the shade in the future if you come across one you like. Do you think it originally had a metal tole shade?
ReplyDeleteI love the shade that is on it now! The lamp is pretty with the painted flowers.
ReplyDeleteI love the base but no so much the shade. I would live with it awhile and keep looking for something else.
ReplyDeleteI like it just the way it is, but it has to feel right in your gut. I know that feeling when something decorative isn't sitting well. I have a hard time with lamps, too. I don't know why, but when it comes to decor, they are my nemesis. You seem to have a picked a winner, maybe you just need to sit with it a bit...
ReplyDeleteI like the lamp, and also like the light, which the shade provides. It all looks pretty, to me.
ReplyDeleteBut then, I am the world's worst 'lamp-picker-outer'! -grin- I need one, for my comfy chair, and I still have not gotten a new one. ,-(

I like it. I read somewhere that every room needs a little black. I have done that and it does stand out. Hope you are well.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great lamp. I think what is throwing you off is the difference in size with the other lamp. It's very possible that the shade and the lamp were married at some point, but it seems to be the right size. xo Laura
ReplyDeleteHi Rue,
ReplyDeleteI like the lamp and the shade. They are something you don't see everyday and I find that just delightful. Love the delicate flowers on the base.
Your room looks lovely!
xoxo

I like the shade and the brass detailing of the lamp showing. The shade scallops seem to go so well with your furnishings. I also love the lamp base with roses and flowers. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteLive with it for awhile.
FlowerLady
I happen to love this lamp - even the shade. I think it goes perfectly in your living room! I don't think the shade is too large or too light at all. But just my humble opinion! :-)
ReplyDeleteI think it's just perfect and compliments the room ...
ReplyDeleteBut why not live with it a while and see how you feel - I often think it helps.
All the best Jan
Rue, I love the lamp and lampshade. Maybe if you swapped it out with the smaller lamp on the other end of the couch, it would balance out. I've found if I put items in a small-to-large arrangement, with the larger piece being further away, it works better than being what catches my eye, first, as I enter a room.
ReplyDeleteGrace & Peace.
I love the shape of the shade, but you could recover with a vintage fabric??
ReplyDeleteI think the lamp looks so beautiful the way it is.I love the base with the roses. The whole room is so welcoming and charming. Hugs Caroline
ReplyDeleteWow Rue you have lots of help here. I will put my two cents in! I love the lamp shade you have on the other lamp and if you could get another one or one similar that would tie the two lamps together in the room. Love the lamp. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteKris
Well, you certainly don't need any more opinions, but as long as I'm here... I love the lamp as it sits! The shade seems perfectly sized for the base....both are lovely together. The smaller lamp is on a taller table...so to make it look bigger...you could always prop it on books. That way the smaller lamp appears taller...which could result in both lamps looking more equal in size. It's gorgeous! ;)
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of books under the other lamp. I'll have to try that :)
DeleteThank you!

Hi there, I love the lamp the shade, it looks perfect in your home. Jpo
ReplyDeleteI agree
ReplyDeleteThank you, Wendy :)

Rue
ReplyDeleteI love all of the dainty details of your lamp!
I see why you bought it, for sure.
As for the shade, you have to live with it so you must decide.
See if it grows on you, or you can't stand to look at it!
Your instincts with decor are darn good Rue! So, trust what you think.
ReplyDeleteThe shade seems to throw off some very good light with that light shade.
The living room looks lovely as it is now.
I LOVE that lamp! I think the shade is fine for now, but I would keep my eyes open for something that really pops, but not too much because the attention should go on the base. I kinda think a beaded shade would be fun, but it would have to be just perfect.
ReplyDeleteI love the lamp and think it looks beautiful! But I think that you need a flippie-outie (like at the other end of your sofa), rather than a tuckie-innie! Now THAT sounds bad!! ;-) Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteHow about a lampshade with a brocade design in it? I have mine with that on oak bases and they look great. Far better than the beige ones which were too dark.
ReplyDeleteI am crazy for your couch!
I like the shade - and I wouldn't go with a darker shade - because I have done that in a room and for me there is not enough light when I want a brighter feel to it at night. With two different shades darker and light - you have a choice of what to turn on depending on your mood - Love the lamp. and the other lamp - and your living room...well heck - let's just say your whole house from what I've seen.
ReplyDeleteLove the base, the black with red roses is beautiful. I like the shade, too; I agree with others, live with it awhile and see if it grows on you, or drives you crazy :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the lap- it looks perfect right there and with that shade. I wouldn't go darker - why change perfection?
ReplyDeleteI have a weird lamp fetish, I cannot tell you how often I buy and sell and trade and change and swap lamps. It's nearly OCD in me......so this one gets a double thumbs up from me, the lamp weirdo. ♥
I like the light/shade and looks nice in your room. I don't think it looks victorian, one piece doesn't set a tone or style. The other lamp is small so the larger one shines more.
ReplyDeleteThe lamp fits very well in the room and is lovely. It's been said before but its the best advice - wait and see if it grows on you.

i think the lamp base is absolutely gorgeous! But i agree with you ( and others) that the shade is a bit off. i have 2 lamps with their original shades that belonged to my grandmother from the 30's. One of the shades is flared at the bottom and the other one has a scalloped edge at the bottom. One of them is a sort of ecru color while the other one is a bit darker but i think it has probably darkened with age. As has been said, if you're happy with it it doesn't matter. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThe lamp is just beautiful!! Love the colors!!!! Looks great in your living room!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Terri!

Love the lamp! Very pretty piece! I think you made a great purchase! :) ~Rhonda

ReplyDeleteI think the lamp is lovely, Rue...if you're like me, it takes awhile to live with something before making up your mind. It's such a cozy space and the lighting is inviting. Don't worry about getting caught up, just start fresh...xo
ReplyDeleteHi Rue, what a gorgeous lamp and I think the shade is perfect. Just the right scale for the size and style. Nice accent in your lovely room. Hugs, cm
ReplyDeleteI think this lamp and shade is pretty as is, Rue! Shades are easy to change, so why not have a few different ones to suit your mood or the season?
ReplyDeleteThe lamp is perfect! :)
