When I came back to Blogland, I noticed quite a few changes, but one of them in particular was music.
Or the lack thereof.
Some of you newbies will probably be shocked by this, but just about everyone had music playing when you opened up their blog. Most of the time, it was pleasant and you got a real feeling of who the person was behind the writing.
I think the music on my last blog did that. Especially since readers would often tell me that they would click on it just to hear the music play, because it made them happy. It was combination of oldies and country, which worked for that particular blog.
When I left, there was a huge controversy going on about whether or not you should have it on there. People were arguing and telling people to turn it off and others were adamant that it stayed. It was kinda ugly.
Anyway, I guess the non-music people won.
Of course, there's still a few holdouts, some of which happen to be on my list of favorites ;)
But, except for those few, there's just pictures, words and silence now.
One of my dear friends asked if I was going to put music on this blog and I went back and forth on it and pretty much decided that I probably won't or at least not constantly streaming.
Today though, I thought I'd share some of the music I listen to and that I would have put on here, just in case you're curious :)
I mostly listen to music between 1920 and 1950. Not that I don't ever listen to newer music than that, but it's what I like to listen to most of the time. In fact, I have a station on my Pandora that is called Annette Hanshaw Radio.
Who is that? Well, this lovely lady right here:
She's my favorite female singer from the 20s and early 30s. Unfortunately for us, she retired after only 10 years. You can learn more about her here.
My favorite male singer from the 30s is Mr. Al Bowlly:
Sadly, we lost him to an air-raid bomb, in England during WWII. You can read more about his life here.
Then there's the music of Cole Porter.......
He wrote such lovely songs, didn't he?
Of course, no music list of mine would be complete without Bing.
I could go on and on, but I'll stop with my all-time favorite song and the first one you heard when you opened up my last blog.
Moonlight Serenade by the legendary Glenn Miller:
So, that should give you a good idea of what you would hear if you walked into my house.
Are you shocked?
You shouldn't be.
After all, it's not like I'd be living in this house and playing something like Metallica ;)
Well, I hope you enjoyed listening to a few of my favorites from the past.
Have a beautiful music filled day!
xo
rue
I love it all!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sue! :)
DeleteYou know, since I've been bitten by the "boho bug" I want everything retro/cottage. In fact people call my new emerging look Cottage Boho. Somewhere along the line, I guess when I left TX, I left all my albums behind and every bit of music I had. I just didn't want to mess with it and had so many things to do. And frankly, needed to get the hell out of there while I still could! Maybe you understand that. But now I've been kind of yearning for the old record player. Where I'd find the old music I guess would be here and there. I mostly live in complete silence, except when I turn the TV on at night sometimes. I guess that came from being afraid and using my ears to always know exactly where he was in proximity to where I was. Maybe you understand that too, I don't know. But it shifted me into this need to be able to hear every single thing so nothing could sneak up on me. Of course you'd have that music with that house. I hope you never change your photo on your blog, because that's just how I want to see you.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Your new home is definitely what I would define as Cottage Boho, but mostly, I would just say that it is very YOU, Brenda. Full off beautiful colors, coziness and joy :)
DeleteI'm so sorry you had to leave all of that behind, but I think you should bring music back into your life or at least a little. There's always a place for music. Pandora will let you listen to it for free. I pay a small fee so I don't have to listen to commercials, but you don't have to.
Although, I fully understand why you would want your ears open. Hopefully, you can start listening again to more pleasant things.
I promise not to change that picture for awhile. How's that? ;)
xo
Gosh, I do remember music on blogs. I think it was about the same time I had AOL dial up and an old computer, even then. Everything took days to load. Now I listen to music on my computer while I am blogging. Funny how things come and go in blogland.
ReplyDeleteBarbara, I lived in very small towns back then and all we had was dial up. I know exactly what you mean LOL
DeleteI listen to music when I'm blogging too :)
I never knew that! I remember old-school MySpace let you have a song for your profile, but then everyone moved to FaceBook. I kinda wish they they still did that.
ReplyDeleteI wish they still did too, Jessica :)
DeleteThere is only one blog that I read that has music playing - which has reminded me I haven't heard from her so must go and check, but that is an aside! - otherwise they are all quiet. I have only known blogs more recently and they have all always been that way. It is funny how fashions and tastes move on in these things too isn't it! xx
ReplyDeleteI hope your friend is okay!

I remember music on blogs. That was before I had my own. I liked it though. I love your style and am not surprised at all. I love Moonlight Serenade as well....such a classic! I enjoyed listening to some of your favorites. I had never heard some of these. Have a lovely evening and rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I introduced you to something new, Vicky and thank you! :)
DeleteI hope you had a lovely week too.
I don't like music on blogs - I find it very distracting. There's only one blog I visit that still has music, but I just mute it when I go to that blog. You might actually hear Metallica playing if you walked in my house! But, then again, you might also hear Frank Sinatra, Carole King, Kings of Leon, Eva Cassidy, John Legend...or maybe some smooth jazz, disco, or classical. The only music you wouldn't hear is opera or extreme country. ;-) Thank you for sharing some of your favorite music...I am going to listen to it now!
ReplyDeleteSometimes, it can be. I agree. But there was some that were just really special ;)
DeleteEveryone is different in their music tastes, Melanie! That's what makes us unique. I wouldn't kick you out for wanting to listen to any of those ;)
I hope you liked them!
xo
Yours and Kim's blogs - always great music. I listen to a lot of Etta James, Muddy Waters and Smokey Robinson.. Lots of golden oldies, plus Glenn Miller always...
ReplyDeleteAnd, this is your blog - play whatever, whenever you want!
I'll be looking and listening!
Love all of those too, MimiG!
DeleteThank you :)
Rue, it sure brought back sweet memories when I listened to Moonlight Serenade, as it reminds me of my father. It's such a beautiful song. And Bing is a favorite of mine too. My blog used to open up with Louis Armstrong, When You're Smiling. I really miss it sometimes, but like you said, things have changed in the blog world since then. Thanks for letting me listen to all your oldies. They speak to me as well.
ReplyDelete~Sheri
Awww.... I'm so glad it brought a sweet memory of your dad, Sheri :)

I had no idea about music on blogs, since I just started mine 2 years ago. I love a broad variety of music, but no Metallica for me, either!
ReplyDeleteLOL I'm not a fan, but my guy seems to think they're the cat's meow, so I hear them once in awhile. Just not on my stations LOL
DeleteCole Porter for me! But love anything Glenn Miller, and Bing. The others are new to me. I play Edith Piaf on Pandora and still, in February, listen to vintage labels Christmas music. The new music I listen to is Pink Martini, especially China Forbes.
ReplyDeleteI too remember music on blogs and I was very late finding blogs. I liked it but sometimes turned the volume down to focus on the reading.
Your choice of music does not surprise me in the least, Rue. I would be completely shocked if you did listen to Metallica. I hope you post sometime about other vintage loves--television shows? movies, books? Most of the books on my shelves are from the 20s to 50s. I try new releases and do love some, Louise Penny for example, but I no longer read current literature that mostly seems to be about dysfunctional families--who needs realism, not me.
Oooo.... Edith Piaf and Pink Martini are great! I love the classic Christmas music too.
DeleteI;d be surprised if you listened to Metallica too, Dewena! ;)
I think I will share some other vintage loves. Thank you for the suggestions!

I had music on my blog for the first 2 years and I still miss it. Playlist went away and with all the controversy about music I never bothered to bring it back. I do remember the music on Dear Daisy and it reminded me of a simpler time when people slowed down to enjoy life a bit more.
ReplyDeleteExactly... instead of a rat race to zoom through, you sat and enjoyed blogs. Now, I'm sorry to say, it's just not the same.
DeleteI used to have music on my blog and I would change it out to go with what ever the post was about. I love big band music, Dean Martin, John Denver, Patsy Cline, the Beatles (early years).
ReplyDeleteI know you did, Penny ;)

Thank you, MimiG :)
DeleteI, too love that music. I have often thought I was born in the wrong year. So much of the music, art, fashion that I truly love is in the 1900's-1950's. Not that I don't like some modern songs and such, I just know where my heart lies. I think I must have cabin fever. I'm starting to be melancholic! Anyway, hope you have a wonderful day. If you happen to have any spare warm weather, please send it East :)
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Deb
There's nothing wrong with being melancholic! Just turn on some of that happy music we enjoy ;)
DeleteI'll do my best with the weather!
Great music Rue! I also had music on my blog when I first started, but there was also a controversy over copyright law that scared a lot of people into removing it. Being an artist I can also understand this problem because I've found my artwork used without my consent. I will have to go check out some of those links you gave us for those artists.
ReplyDeleteI remember you having music :)
DeleteI hope you like my choices, Catherine!
xo
We have that in common as well, besides starting back blogging! Yes, I do remember how just about every blog you visited had music, and I admit to stopping a few and listening to most! It did really give you a sense of visiting some one at home! Love your selection of music, especially Bing! Have a great day Rue! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Christine!
DeleteI hope you have a great night :)
Rue, I was one of those nuts that had music and so enjoyed it on blogs..But at that time blogging was a simpler kind of life style..Now it's all about BIG numbers and magazine photos ( no point and shoot cameras ) and trying to get big sponsors..So many of the good ole group that started in 2007 have left blogging..
ReplyDeleteBut then it was like visting an old friend each morning and having coffee with them,,I loved laughing with them, crying with them, praying for them..
Now all you need to leave a comment is a rubber stamp that "says I love this ". Nothing is personal anymore with the new bloggers..
I adored your music and was one of those that would leave your page up just to listen to your music each day..Any hoo time for this olden gal to get off my soap bov..Love you my sweet young friend..Gloria
Darlin'... you can climb up on that soap box anytime you want ;)
Deletelove you,
rue
I meant Box..ha ha!! hey it happens with old age and bad eye sight..hugs gloria
ReplyDeleteHA! I knew what you meant ;)
DeleteI love the music of the 30's thru 50's and early 60's "Moonlight Serenade"-just beautiful. Liz
ReplyDeleteThank you, Liz :)
DeleteGreat stuff! Looks like I need to add a few more stations to pandora! I have The Boswell Sisters, Andrew Sisters, Glenn Miller, and the like. And I listen to the Disney station a lot, lol! But yeah, there is also Jethro Tull, Beatles, Roger Miller, and Metallica too, haha! Thanks for the tunes!
ReplyDeleteI loved the music too! Just today I was visiting Dear Daisy Cottage and thought I would add music back to my blog. I couldn't find any programs to put on blogger. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. You'd find Glen Miller at my blog too mixed with a little Earth, Wind & Fire. :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I still own all our 60's and 70's albums--could never part with them. I also miss blog music --those were the days!
ReplyDeleteRight there with you. Good stuff!
