"All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast."
John Gunther
Sunday morning.
While everyone is still snoozing, including the dogs, I climb out of my cozy, warm bed, pull on my robe, put on my slippers and meander up the stairs.
It's completely peaceful, with only the birds chirping outside.
I take a minute to enjoy the quiet and the view....
while I start up the percolator.
As the sun moves across the sky, Bubba and Mini, with bellies full from their breakfast, take advantage of the rays of sunshine making patterns across the floor.....
and I begin to make breakfast.
As the smell of sizzling bacon floats through the air, I can hear the house waking up.
I get the eggs out of the refrigerator.....
and start up the toaster.
Eventually, everyone is out of bed, wiping sleep from their eyes and smiling, because they realize what day it is.
Sunday.
It's always been a tradition in my family to eat a nice breakfast on Sundays. I guess, because it's usually the only day that no one is in a rush.
Last weekend, it was a simple breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast.
Other days it could be Eggs Benedict or french toast.
No matter what though, it's always a breakfast to eat leisurely in our jammies, while we reminisce about the past week and take time to enjoy each others company.
Yes, Sunday is most definitely, my favorite day of the week.

I love a good breakfast and the weekends with family is the best time!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is :)
DeleteOh my word Rue, This really is you. I just scrolled down several of your past posts and loved the history of your home as well as everything you post about. I have MISSED you and it is lovely to see your comment this morning. Oops afternoon. I didn't completely stop blogging but I now do it on a much smaller scale. I can't tell you how happy I am to know you are blogging again.
ReplyDeleteYour favorite day is a lovely story. Breakfast is special when everyone is together. AND, it looks delicious. I noticed your vintage bowls and you haven't really changed. You are an old fashioned girl and I love this about you. Your profile photo looks like Scarlet O'Hara. I remember your old Blog when you dressed up like her in her green picnic dress. BIG smile here.
Happy blogging my sweet friend,
Jeanne xo
It's really me and nope, I haven't changed LOL I've missed you too, Jeanne :)
DeleteHA! I'd forgotten that I posted those pictures of me dressed up.
I'm so happy you're still blogging even if it isn't as much :)
xoxo
It's Saturday for us - a nice sleep in and then a treat of bacon at breakfast.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend.
Thank you! I hope you had a lovely weekend too :)
DeleteWe always had a good breakfast, all together, on Sun. morning when our kids were home.
ReplyDeleteNow, Mr. Sweet and I still do the same. :) and it's always extra special when one of the grands has spent the night and we have her at the table, too. All our boys are grown and scattered...but all the grandgirls are still around. :)
Every now and then, I pull my vintage Corning ware coffee pot out and I love the taste of perked coffee....most of the time, I just do the Mr Coffee thing. :) it's good, too.
I'm glad you still have your breakfasts together and that you're able to have it with the grand girls once in awhile :)
DeleteThe percolator does make a great cup of coffee ;)
xo
I love your blog and have added it to Friends of Linderhof! Sunday mornings are not are lazy big breakfast mornings for we have 9 am church! Which means a weekday breakfast. Saturday is our lazy day breakfast! I, too, use my "grandmother's" cutlery -- it's German silver engraved with her initials (quotes around "grandmother" because she was German and it IS her initials!) And I think food tastes better when it's not eaten from stainless!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Martha! You've already been added to mine ;)
DeleteThat is so lovely that you have your grandmother's silver and it has her initials!
Thank you for your visit :)
I used to make pancakes on Sundays before church when our son was still living at home. I need to do this again just for me and the hubby!
ReplyDeleteI think you should ;)

I love Sundays too and often make a big breakfast. When my kids are home visiting, I always make them a big breakfast. Your breakfast looks tasty! I love bacon and could eat it daily if it was good for me. My favorite is Applewood smoked...yum! Have a beautiful weekend.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what's in that pan! lol It's the only bacon I'll eat :)
DeleteI don't do it weekly, but when I do make a special Sunday breakfast, it really is a great way to celebrate the weekend! I"m going to try to do it more regularly!
ReplyDeleteI agree with John Gunther and thankfully, since I've worked from home for years, I've been able to take time for a leisurely breakfast most days.
ReplyDeleteBut you beautifully posted about Sunday mornings and Sunday breakfasts being extra special, Rue. I want a toaster like yours! And I know I still have an electric skillet somewhere along with an old electric bread warmer.
Your Presto percolator is magnificent! It took me right back to walking into my mother's kitchen and hers perking away. But then I started remembering the old, old t.v. commercial about the percolator singing away in the Maxwell House coffee ads. Just had to see if I could find it and naturally it's available.
Here's the link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdx_SjxXhmY
Hope I did that right because I loved hearing it again, straight from the 1950s. I can't wait until breakfast in the morning!
I think I need an electric bread warmer, now! ;)
DeleteThat's so funny! Every time I turn it on that sound goes through my head. I love that commercial.
I hope you had a lovely weekend, Dewena :)
Sundays used to be like that for us...now we are rushing off to driver's ed at 8:15am...ugh. I much prefer eggs and bacon in my pjs! Yum.
ReplyDeleteWe went through that time in our house too. I feel for you... I really do.
DeleteHopefully your Sundays will get back to normal soon :)
Such a descriptive post. I can almost smell that bacon.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I know what you mean.... I'd love some bacon right now, but yogurt it is lol

I want a slice of bacon--and an egg, too. My grandmother had a percolator (I think it was Corning), and I loved that little splash of coffee in the lid. Almost like the heartbeat of morning. I have missed your wonderful posts! Each one is a breath of fresh air.
ReplyDeleteAwww..... thank you, Michael!
DeleteDid you see your quote over on the sidebar? I found it and had to put it back on ;)

What a wonderful breakfast and what a special way to start the day. Everytime i visit, I get a warm and fuzzy feeling. Your old fashioned world is so homey and friendly.
ReplyDeleteYou are so sweet to say that..... thank you, Miss Merry :)
DeleteSounds lovely. I am empty-nesting it right now but I can totally see the gang around the table. Your Sunday commitment to breakfast is a great way to say goodbye to the old week and hello to the new.
ReplyDeleteEven though you're empty nesting, Barbara, I think you should still treat yourself :)
DeleteMmm, I'm coming to your house for breakfast tomorrow morning! ;-) It's usually just myself on Sunday mornings as my hubby works most Sundays and we're empty nesters.
ReplyDeleteYou never showed up! ;) It was biscuits and gravy this last time.
DeleteJust like I said to Barbara above, I think you should still treat yourself, Melanie :)
Gorgeous pictures Rue. I love the picture of the dogs basking in the sun, mine do that too :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jessica :)
DeleteLovely pictures. Oh I agree, Sundays for us are the same. I've had my cup of coffee, and it's off to make breakfast, French toast and sausage. Enjoy your breakfast and your day! :)
ReplyDeleteI know what I'm making this coming weekend LOL
DeleteI hope you enjoy your day too :)
I love early mornings, too. Sunday mornings at your home look and sound just perfect to me.♥
ReplyDeleteThank you, Beverly :)

Rue,
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen a percolator in years. My husband thinks that they are the best coffee makers making the best coffee ever. I haven't been able to find one anywhere! Your bacon and eggs and toast looks delicious..........and Sunday is a good day for me too. That sunrise is beautiful. What a nice way to start your morning with, breakfast and family.
~Sheri
Sheri, check Etsy. They usually have a few of them on there. Also, eBay has some. Just make sure that they've tested it to see if it still works. Good luck :)
DeleteSunday is a perfect day of the week, I love your percolator and toaster. We love to have breakfast before heading off to church. My church is close enough for me to walk too and I love taking in the beauty of nature on my way there. Nothing like breakfast in P.J.'s with your loved ones.
ReplyDeleteHow nice that you can walk to church! It sounds lovely :)
DeleteWhat a lovely post - and thank you for inviting us in for your Sunday breakfast. I love your house and your vintage objects. Sounds like a perfect morning.
ReplyDeleteBig hugs
elizabeth
