Three years

It took me over three years to decide on a paint color for my bedroom.

 I have no idea why.

I've never had that problem before this house. In fact, I can usually walk into a room and know exactly what I want, but for whatever reason this room, more than any other, stumped me.

Maybe because it was yet another room painted brown?

Ugh.... what was with those people?

I thought about painting it white for awhile and then I vacillated between different shades of green and yellow. In fact, I painted one wall yellow, but I hated it, because it was just too bright and oddly enough made the room seem darker.

That yellow wall stayed that way for a long time.

You can see it in this picture from when I started painting the room about a week ago:

Then I bought two cans of green, but I just couldn't commit to it.

I wanted my bedroom to be bright and cheerful, since it's a downstairs room (think basement) without a lot of light and I realized I just needed to find the 'right' yellow.

Did you know that yellow is one of the hardest colors to get right?

Trust me, it is.

One day, while shopping for something else at the hardware store, I found it.

THE yellow.

Finally, after all that time, I was able to commit to a color and I started painting it as soon as I could.

Here it is at the halfway point:

Now, it's finally finished and painted Whisper Yellow by Behr :)

Now for the tour......

This is one of my grandpa's childhood dressers:

My mom needlepointed this pillow for me, when I was a kid.

My great grandparent's cedar trunk:

The view I wake up to in the morning:

The other one of my grandpa's dressers:

An antique bed that my mom picked up years ago:

This is the matching side table to the dressers, a 1930s alarm clock, and my favorite flowers:

This side table is actually a chamber pot holder:

No, I don't use it!

I'm not THAT crazy.

Original 1930s lighting:

Looking towards the 'vanity room', you can see the pink and yellow go pretty well together :)

Gloria, here's that screen you asked about ;)

And that's it!

I have to admit, it was worth the wait, but I'm thrilled it's finally done :)

  3. Well, let me start by saying that each piece of furniture is absolutely gorgeous - what treasures!

Our house was Benjamin Moore Provence (a buttery yellow) throughout, but I am slowly moving from yellow to white. I love the soft yellow, but my husband's paintings don't pop on the yellow walls. Since our home is also his gallery, we need to showcase the art.

I know what you mean about the right yellow. When we bought our first home, I chose a bright yellow for our bedroom. Well, it looked like the light was on in the middle of the day- way too strong.

Your bedroom looks lovely - enjoy!

  4. Hi Rue and your choice of wall color looks wonderful! I do love yellow and agree with you that you need the right shade. Your furnishings are just beautiful and you've taken such great care of them too! I found a cedar trunk very similar to yours for my daughter when she was in high school and she still has it. Just love your sweet home.

  10. Your bedroom is beautiful! Yes, yellow can be tricky. My last bedroom was yellow and it took three tries to get just the right yellow. Yep, I painted it three times in one week! This time I went with a soft blue. You have some lovely pieces of furniture and I love that mirror over your bed!

  16. The right shade of paint is the key! Your bedroom looks very nice particularly with all your beautiful antiques. Love that bed! Yellow is a favorite of mine as well. My house is open concept and yellow is the main. Chose this color 6 years ago and I'm still happy with it which is always a good sign.

  18. Wow, wow! An amazing before and after. I adore the new color. I agree that yellows are so hard. (I remember a long ago bedroom that I painted yellow. The chip looked great, but in person, it hurt my eyes; the paint should have been called School Bus on Steroids. Yikes.) You found the perfect shade of yellow. It's soft, elegant, cheery--and a wonderful backdrop for your antiques. The bed and chests are to die for, so many details to savor, and with a tender family history.

  19. Your bedroom is gorgeous. The shade of yellow you chose is perfect for that room. Just soft and light enough. Your inherited furniture is just lovely, too. Oohing and aahing over the details on the side rails of that bed! Oh, what is this vanity room that you speak of? I clicked on the link, but it didn't work.

Oh yeah, and that screen and everything else in the room. You have some wonderful furniture and accessories!

  23. Rue, your current house is just wonderful. I thought the last one was too. :)

I agree that yellow paint is the hardest to choose. At our last house, my kitchen ended up a mustard color and that wasn't on purpose.

Love your dressers and night stands. It all looks simply beautiful. Now you can enjoy your work and the long wait. It was well worth it to find the right shade of yellow.

  34. Rue, your rooms are all so…well, just right, is what I keep thinking. Nothing that needs to be taken away.

I sure could have used your advice 10 years ago when I made the decision to paint my kitchen and adjoining family room Benjamin Moore's Yellow Raincoat. It looked so cheerful on a gray day but I have been unhappy with it for a long time but I'm feeling choosing paint color anxiety. I'm waiting for paint color assurance, hoping it will come.

I think you'll be happy with your bedroom for a long time.

    1. Dewena, you are so sweet.... thank you.

The only two colors I can guarantee are the ones I chose for my kitchen cabinets and my bedroom, but it's such a personal choice. Yellow raincoat is a cute name. I always make sure I like the name before I paint anything. I'm odd that way lol

  36. For some reason, I'm having analysis paralysis about my bedroom paint color too. Right now, it's vomit green, and it will probably stay that way for a long time. So many other things on the to do list. I thought about a pale yellow, and it's still a possibility, but I go back and forth. We had a khaki color below our chair rail and a pale yellow above it in our previous home in the bedroom and I loved it. Your particular shade of yellow highlights your beautiful antiques so nicely I honestly don't think you could have made a better choice.

  37. Rue, I'm planning to paint my bedroom the same yellow my kitchen has been for decades. But I've been keeping my eye out for other yellows in case that doesn't work. The kitchen is on the northeast corner of the house, and the bedroom on the southwest corner, so ... How would you describe your yellow? Warm, cool, etc?

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work.
