Treasure

Remember that show "If Walls Could Talk?"

Well, every time I've moved into an old home I've looked for treasure, but since I've moved into this house I've barely found anything worth noting. I did find an ink bottle that dates from the 30s that you can see here (hint, it's the middle bottle), but other than that I hadn't found a thing.

Today though, I needed to go into my root cellar to get a suitcase out for a trip and while I was climbing out, I spotted something shiny.

A pin with a daisy on it!

Have I mentioned that daisies are my favorite flower?

And then I spotted a piece of paper, which turned out to be old wallpaper.

I wonder where this could have been in the house...

Then a seashell appeared!

I wondered why a shell would be there, but then I remembered that the original owner, Margaret had gone to school in California. Could a shell from that long ago and in such good condition be from her?

Then the prize....

A copper ring!

At first I thought it might be a child's ring, but it fits my ring finger and I'm not exactly known for having small fingers, so I know it couldn't be.

Could it have been Margarets?

I wish I knew.

Anyway, I cleaned it up and I'm wearing it, so I guess that means I'm married to my house ;)

Hopefully I'll be able to find out how old the ring is.

I know it's probably not worth much to anyone else, but it's worth a whole lot to me.

I think I need to do some more exploring and risk the spiderwebs under my house, don't you?

  3. Neat treasures. Copper is good for pain, like arthritis and joints. I wear a copper ring on my right pinky finger that has helped a lot.

I wonder what else you are going to find in your sweet little house. It's exciting finding treasures.

  4. How neat! Little windows into the past left just for you. :)

When my dad had his 100 year old house he found lots of marbles and notes written on paper and on the wood inside the walls. Isn't that fun?

  6. What a great find! It was meant for you! Our old house was divided up into apartments for several years and the previous tenants hadn't been to good to her I'm sure. Then one day a loving family bought it and her husband was a carpenter. He turned it back into a single family home, but had to gut it. We now have sheet rock instead of plaster walls and they replaced some of the hardwood floors with wood from an old family home that was being torn down. They also brought in some of the old trim. It really does look like it belongs in this house. The only thing worth passing on to us was an old photo of the house which we love and cherish. I would love to have seen how the interior originally looked.

  14. What fun finds, I've found a few trinkets in my hard which I think were out there because of some hurricane damage the house sustained years ago. Everything has history and finds like these just connect us once more to the universe.

  15. You definitely need to see if there is any more treasure!!! Have you checked that the ring is not rose gold, as that often looks like copper! It is gorgeous though whatever it is made of. Great finds indeed! xx

  17. I love finding things in old houses. I use to joke with my daughter I would clean up abandon homes so I could find some lost treasures from previous owners.

  18. How fun! I would love to go treasure hunting in old houses. That ring is so pretty, but I think the button is the sweetest! maybe it could be turned into a pendant. Happy hunting!

  20. Lucky you! Our home is 41 years old...we are the second owners. Never found anything inside, but outside while planting flowers and shrubs, I found a couple of hot wheels cars! ;)

  21. I loved that show! My walls would say one boring lady lived here first. It was a big beige box when we moved in. Only found a couple of nail holes where a picture would have been hung and not a single window had seen a curtain. (blinds on all windows were required so the windows were covered) Enjoy your new little treasure.

  24. What fun treasures you've unearthed! It would be wonderful if you had the history behind them all. The only things we've found are a very old toy car and glass marbles buried in our yard.

  26. Good morning Rue, How fun it is to find treasures in your home. It is awesome that you know so much of the history of your prior owners. I loved that show "If Walls could Talk." I still like HGTV but they have way too many House Hunters. shows.

The treasures you found are all interesting but I agree that the ring is a real find. I so agree the value of this find goes beyond money. I like it so much.

    Happy hunting.
    xo, Jeanne

  27. That is a pretty ring, Rue. I love copper. Did you house have many owners after Margaret?

When we moved into our home one drawer in an upstairs built in cabinet n was full of important papers and items the last owner forgot to take! Luckily I had her e-mail and forwarding address was able to send it all to her

  29. How lovely! We found an old whisky bottle in the crawl space of our last home (built in 1926) and a 10 cent Kellogg coupon when we took down the lathe and plaster wall in the kitchen. Nothing nearly as exciting as what you found! Best wishes for a happy marriage. LOL xxx ~ Nancy

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
