Music break 2

Since I love music so much from the 20s through the 40s, and because it's what I mostly listen to, I thought I'd share artists and songs of that time once a week.

Sometimes it will be songs from the same artists I've already shared and sometimes it'll be a different artist that I'll tell you a little bit about.

Maybe you've heard of them and maybe you haven't, but if I post about them, I think they're wonderful.

Mildred Bailey was a singer in the 1930s. She was known as the Queen of Swing and she performed with the biggest names of the era. She never reached superstardom, although she's one of my all time favorite artists and had such a wonderful voice.

All that said, here she is singing "Please Be Kind"

I hope you enjoy this little series.

You can find the first music break 'here'.

And you can read more about my favorite music 'here'.

  2. I had no idea that you had a love for music going so far back. That's awesome! Most of us---myself included, follow the old time movies and stars so I find this refreshing. I wish I recognized this lady, I bet my mom and dad would if they were still here.

  3. My daughter is really into big band music of the 40s, she'd know this gal.....but I had never heard of her till now, thanks, Rue!

You know for over 90 year-old music that is remarkably clean and clear a sound - just wow.

Looking forward to lots more! Appreciate your efforts!!

  5. I love this old music too! My dad always listened to Glen Miller and other big bands when I was growing up. Now I often listen to those plus Big Crosby, The Andrews Sisters, and others from that era. Oh and who can forget Patsy Cline. :)

  6. Rue,
My Mother and Father loved music (as do I) in fact they met at a Saturday dance gathering in their little local community.
We had the radio on all of the time growing up and my Mom had the sweetest voice. Brings back such wonderful memories.

  15. Rue, I love music, all different kinds. I used to listen to my brother's records growing up, and he used to tell me about the song and the musician who played it. It's a nice idea to have a music post from time to time, and I know I'll come across a song that I know and love. :~) Mildred's voice is a gentle one.

  16. good grief! i have no idea why sitting here listening to that brought tears to my eyes. but it did.
    i was born too late.
i have always connected to the 30's and 40's. my favorite eras for so many reasons. even if it held such an horrendous war.
but it also had such heart. and seemingly innate style. oh i love it. especially the music.
and this will be so special... what you're doing for us. THANK YOU rue! xoxo

  18. I love Nan Wynn from the 40s.. She had what I would call a smooth, soulful voice. She actually did the singing for Rita Hayworth in that Fred Astaire clip you posted.

  19. I will definitely check her out. I've had Night Train stuck in my head all week. I love all the brass of the big band sound. I set a station for it on Pandora at work the other day, and it seriously got me through!

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
