Born Thomas Wright Waller.
He laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano, but he was also an excellent entertainer.
He was so famous and fabulous that in 1926, that he was actually kidnapped to play at one of Al Capone's birthday parties.
With so many wonderful songs, it was hard to pick one, so I chose two.
"Ain't Misbehavin'" 1929
Written by Fats Waller, Harry Brooks (music), and Andy Razaf (lyrics)
Sung here in 1943:
"Until the Real Thing Comes Along" 1937
Words and music by Sammy Cahn, Saul Chaplin, and L.E. Freeman.
Please look him up, he was a truly wonderful musician and there's so much more to enjoy :)

Great story about the kidnapping. Leave it to Capone to go about things the hard way!
ReplyDeleteHello Rue, I too love music and this was a very nice change from so many posts. I remember the songs too. Fat's Waller was awesome for his time. This kind of music never gets old.

ReplyDeletei can't ever put into words how hearing these songs makes me feel. and i mean the REAL songs from way back then. true recordings. like the ones on your post.
i just could listen to them always. they're as if my hot tired feet are slipping into cool comfortable shoes.... and there's a ceiling fan going... and time stands still.
sometimes in that first moment... even better than being barefoot if you know what i mean!
anyway.

Rue, what a melodic accompaniment to my mid-morning coffee! My daughter has us watching 'Boardwalk Empire', and I am becoming quite acquainted with Mr. Capone's scary antics!
