My colorful little kitchen

I finally cleared out all the stuff from the projects I'd been working on (i.e. moved them into another room) and took some pictures of my kitchen.

And by some, I mean A LOT. So, you might want to grab something to drink and a snack.

I'm not kidding.

Anywho....

if you're a first time visitor, this is the view you'd see first, coming in from the dining room:

But before we go in and just to remind you, here's a picture of what it looked like when I first moved in:

Scary, huh?

You can see a couple more pictures and where my inspiration came from 'here.'

Anyway, come on in...

You can see a peek of the den/guest room to the left, but we'll visit that room another day.

Here's where the cooking magic happens:

On the left is a view into the dining room and on the right is another peek of the den.
And that's Bubba coming in to see what mom is up to, on the bottom left. Or maybe to get into his Bubba nest, that's under the island.

Yes, my dog has a "nest" lol

I had to special order the floor tiles. They thought I was crazy when I asked for them, since they're usually used for schools now.

I collect old cookbooks, so they're scattered around here and there. There's actually a lot of good recipes in them.

And here is where most of the work happened:

(When I get the pictures off of my old computer, I'll share the pictures of the demo.)

The sink was found on ebay for only $175.
The more amazing part is that it still had the original faucet.
I was ecstatic!

The above picture makes the cabinets look dark, but the picture below is more true to the colors.
It's Behr paint in Melted Butter and Sagey. The wall color is Cotton Whisper.

Funny story... I went to buy paint for my bedroom the other day and I picked up a paint card with three yellows on it, so I could see which one would look better. One of them turned out to be the same yellow that's in the kitchen. I chose the lighter one called Whisper Yellow though. I figured Melted Butter in a bedroom was just wrong lol

The laminate was taken out and I had the white tile put in. You should have seen their faces when I asked for just plain white tile in my kitchen and on top of the fact that I wanted bullnose tile on the edges, "Like my grandmother had". These are the same people I bought the flooring from.

Yes, I'm pretty sure they think I'm nuts.

Oh well, they wouldn't be the first ones.

You can see my 1960s percolator peeking out from under the cabinet. It makes great coffee!

My grandfather's baby bowl:

I love this butter dish, so I thought I'd give it a moment of fame.

I love my sink.

Can you tell?

Just in case you weren't sure, here's another picture of it:

HA!

Moving on....

Here's the view coming in from the downstairs or the side door:

Straight ahead is the original ironing board cabinet and the white thing to the right of it, is where the iron sleeps.

And yes, I actually use them. Vintage linens have to be ironed.

Here's a closer look:

Pretty cute, huh?

Here's the breakfast nook that was so sad looking when I moved in:

I lifted up the table cloth so you could see how I painted it.

Pretty racy, huh? ;)

When I was underneath the table painting, I went to paint the underside of the table and found this:

"Phooey to you"

My guess is a child, that lived in this home a long time ago, wasn't too happy with mom at some point lol

Anyway, I couldn't paint over it. So, there it stays :)

And there's my 1950s Hotpoint fridge:

Can you believe I found it on craigslist for only $100?

Neither could I.

If that man ever looks up what this fridge normally costs, I'm sure he'll faint.

It still works perfectly.

Lastly, here's where I keep my keys and below is a kitchen prayer.

"God bless my little kitchen; I love its every nook,
God bless me as I do my work~ wash pots, and pans, and cook.
May the meals that I prepare be seasoned from above,
With Thy great blessing and Thy grace, but most of all, Thy love.
As we partake of earthly food, Thy table before us spread,
We'll not forget to thank Thee Lord, who gives us daily bread.
So bless my little kitchen, God, and those who enter in,
May they find naught but joy and peace and happiness therein.
Amen"

I hope you enjoyed the tour :)

Until next time,
rue

  1. Oh, Rue, I LOVED the kitchen tour. I have a case of Sink Envy, too. Your cabinet colors, tile floor, white tile counters--all classic and timeless. I adore your antiques and vintage items. And the little door for the iron with the lighting bolts is amazing---I've never seen one before, and I'm charmed. So funny that previous owner left a message (I wouldn't paint over it, either). Your refrigerator was a find--and a testament to the workmanship. Nothing new lasts anymore. This is a beautiful kitchen. Sunlight streaming through the windows, vintage cookbooks (they really do have classic recipes, don't they?). Love that Bubba has a ringside seat while his mama cooks. This is a post to savor, to return again and again. Thanks for the tour! I have loved all of your kitchens, but this one is my favorite.

    1. Wow.... thank you so much, Michael! I know it's not a standard kitchen, but it's me and I love it too. Even though it was hard work, it was worth it to see it come back to life :)

  2. Hi Rue,
I just love your sweet vintage kitchen. It reminds me of my Aunt Mary's (everyone has an Aunt Mary, right?) kitchen where I spent so much time sipping tea and chatting. Miss her. I could be so happy cooking there. Love your sink and that iron and board. What treasures.

    1. Hi Ahrisha,
In fact I do have an Aunt Mary! lol The kitchen is more of a tribute to my grandma Bonnie though. She had a 1940s kitchen even in the 80s and it always felt so warm and cozy, that I knew I wanted the same feeling in this house. Thank you for the compliments. It's nice to know that it reminded you of your aunt :)

  3. Oh how I've missed your posts Rue! In these times of "more is better" its so refreshing to see how much you enjoy vintage. I also love that you don't seem bothered by what is the in thing at the moment. Your kitchen is lovely full of so many treasures. I especially like the ironing board cupboard. It has always made so much sense to me to store it this way - the iron cupboard is new to me.
    Have a great day

  5. Hey, Rue..glad to see you back, girl. Enjoyed your photos of the kitchen. When we first married in 1960, we bought a cute little 2 bedroom house and it had a nice large kitchen. It had black and white tiles on the floor and we had them removed and white tile installed. Can you even believe it...I must have been on Meth or something...:)
I would give anything for black and white tile now. hahhaa...we did put black and white backsplash in the kitchen in our olden house.
Is this the same house you stalked when you had your other blog..??

No, it's not. I moved out of Ohio to Arizona and found this one by accident.

  6. Oh my goodness gracious. It has made my day to find you here. I was just mentioning you to Jeanne last week, and wondering how you were. Please come visit when you can.♥

Love what you have done with your kitchen. There is magic everywhere you look. Of course, you know I have always been a fan of your design style.

  7. OMG! I jumped over here from Ashtree Cottage and was reading along and wondered who you were. And then I realized it was the "Rue" I so fondly remembered who shut down her blog! Just the other day I caught up with Kim of Daisy Cottage too, so it's like old home week. Oh, I sure hope you tell us what's been happening with you, as I will scour your archives. I've missed you! Life changes. I'm divorced and living in another state and yes, blogging is different. I've been sidelined for nearly three years over a double ankle break that turned into a nightmare. And I have ads. If I didn't, the bills wouldn't get paid in my little bitty apartment. Putting you on my sidebar straight away. Some of us STILL have blog rolls, but many have done away with them. I sure hope we get that "community" feel back. I'm SO glad I found you.

Yes, life does change, that's for sure. I'm so glad you found me too. I'm also so sorry to hear about the ankle break and the divorce. Divorce is a messy business and no fun for anyone.

I'll be putting you on my sidebar as well ;)

    2. You're right that blogging has changed. I plan to address that tomorrow. I wish things could go back the way they were. When bloggers pretty much all knew each other, the challenges and hopes for our lives. We helped one another. It was such a different time. And I loved it.

  9. So adorable! I would have bought this house for the iron cupboard alone! It is like my fairytale kitchen. Actually - I have the same kitchen tablecloth (mine is much more tattered than yours, but I love it anyway). I am a new follower. I can tell by this post alone that I am going to love your posts. Pardon me while I search through your archive!

There's a lot of different color combinations that were used during the 1930s if that's what you're going for. I found a great deal of inspiration on Pinterest by looking up 1930s kitchens or homes. I hope that helps.

  15. I heard of you from Cozy Little House. I did enjoy the tour. New follower here. Congratulations on finding a house with such good bones and potential. It's hard to find anyplace where someone hasn't ripped out every bit of charm and replaced it with something new. Yours is charming and I'm impressed with your additions to keep the style and age vibrant. That breakfast nook is so lovely! You've collected many nice pieces to enjoy and all in all make a lovely home that would be a joy to live in. Glad to see you returned to blogging. I did the same as you. Totally deleted years of blogging and then came back. I so regret losing so much. What was I thinking! Please visit me, though you won't find much charming here!

    1. Thank you! I'm sorry to hear about your iron. Mine came with the house and yes I still used it. I bought a back up one on eBay just incase it ever breaks, so you might be able to find one on there too. It's not like a modern one though. You have to unplug it when it gets hot enough (or it gets REALLY hot) and then plug it back in when it gets cool, but it works beautifully :)

  19. Hi Rue,
I found your blog from Cozy Little House. Your kitchen is charming. I like how you painted your cabinets. And the breakfast nook! how fun to have breakfast there!! I'm looking for countertop ideas to replace my 70s laminate. But no granite. Are the tiles easy to keep looking nice? Thanks for returning to blogging. I look forward to visiting your site.

    1. Hi Sarah,

The tiles are easy to keep clean for me. I sprinkle Borax on them and scrub with a sponge and toothbrush about once a month, but most of the time, if you wipe up spills right away, it'll stay nice looking. In my last house I used butcher block from Ikea and stained it with floor stain and that worked great as well. Quartz is also an option for an old house. My mother had some that looked like marble.

      I hope that helps :)

  20. Hi, Just left Brenda's "Cozy Little House" and I am so happy to find your blog. Everything about your kitchen makes me remember my Mother's kitchen, when I was growing up in the 50's. We had the same sink that you have now. I love your flooring and also your white tile. Never would I think you are "nuts" (grin)

  24. It is "...I love ITS every nook..." IT apostrophe "s" is ALWAYS "it is." I noticed that the hand worked piece did not have the apostrophe on it. Its without the apostrophe denotes possession - The dog lost its bone. The cat played with its toy. I love its every nook. NOT I love it is every nook.

  26. What a lovely space you've created. I too have an antique kitchen sink but I haven't managed to install it yet. I was wondering if yours is counter-mounted or if it is also wall-mounted. We're debating between the two methods and I'd love to hear what you did.

    1. Thank you, Cr :)

It's not really mounted so to speak. They decided to sit it on the tile, push it against the backsplash and then glue and seal it. I hope that helps.

    2. Yes, that helps. I was actually hoping it was wall mounted so I could ask what brackets you used but confirmation that the darn thing will stay in place if we simply mount it on the counter is good news. Thanks!
