I was looking up quotes for my Pinterest boards and came across a website that had quotes from some design legends.
So, I thought I'd share some of their sage advice, along with a room they designed just for fun.
Elise de Wolfe is known as "America's first designer."
Nancy Lancaster was the partner of John Fowler and co-owner of Colefax and Fowler.
Albert Hadley was the partner of Sister Parish and co-founder of Parish-Hadley, Associates.
Dorothy Draper created a new style called "Modern Baroque" and was also a cousin of Sister Parish.
Words to design by, I think :)
Do you have a favorite design quote?

I love the one by Robert Hadley and how appropriate for our pinterest, instagram obsessed world.
ReplyDeleteI knew I wasn't crazy! I totally agree with Nancy Lancaster and have always said a house will tell you how it wants to be decorated! Rock on Nancy! ;-) Albert Hadley wasn't too bad either! :-) Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteRue, I really like Albert Hadley's quote, and Dorothy Draper's "birds" quote is so true. I think that's why I like one of a kind stuff. That last picture with the florals is very nice. I loved this post today, as home is so important to me.

The Albert Hadley quote is my favorite, but I also love the Robin's Nest quote by Dorothy Draper. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I believe that filling a home with things you love is the best way to feather your nest.
ReplyDeleteI love all these quotes and the photos are fabulous! The comfort quote speaks to me. It has to be comfortable or I'm not interested. Our house is definitely meant to be lived in!
ReplyDeleteHi Rue and I love this. I agree with Nancy Lancaster. After living in my new/old house for almost a year, I can see more clearly what I want to do or change. Thanks for popping in to see me.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
I love these... great words of wisdom! I especially like Dorothy Draper's quote about the birds building their nests! Lots to ponder over! Thanks so much for sharing them!
ReplyDeleteThese are fantastic! I love the one about birds and their nests. I don't have any particular favorite design quotes, but I always loved the home quote from Jane Austen..."There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort."
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun topic. :) I found this by Billy Baldwin: "Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style." And though not a designer, one of my favorite people, Laura Ingalls Wilder, said: "Home is the nicest word there is."
ReplyDeleteBoth are wonderful quotes. Thank you :)

Great quotes!
ReplyDeleteI am sure that you know the famous quote from William Morris "Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful" Something that I am sure that you live by even if you didn't realise it! xx
ReplyDeleteThese quotes are great. Love the one by Albert Hadley and the one about birds building their nests by Dorothy Draper.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week ~ FlowerLady
These are all great. A home should reflect your personality and be a place that you love opening the door to. xo Laura
ReplyDeleteno favorite quotes but this was fun to see : )
ReplyDeleteno favorite quotes but this was fun to see : )
ReplyDeleteThose are great I agree with them all. :) I don't have a favourite quote, but I like "No room can be called perfect unless it has real comfort" the best. Great post!
ReplyDeleteLove that quote too, Cindy :)

Fabulous quotes, Rue! My favorite is the Nancy Lancaster one, about getting a feel for a house's personality! So true! Have a beautiful week!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother said that keeping things simple in a house made people feel welcome and at home.
ReplyDeleteI think she was right!
Yes, each house has its own personality. I think maybe that is another reason why people named houses at one time.
As soon as I saw Dorothy Draper's name I wondered if she was related to Don? ;).
ReplyDeleteI adore the bird quote. How very true, indeed.
ReplyDeleteI have always liked: “Home isn't where you're from, it's where you find light when all grows dark.”
― Pierce Brown, Golden Son
I adore that quote, Chris. Thank you!

Good quotes all. So much wisdom. Love, love, LOVE the photo of Hadley's Connecticut cottage. I've always liked what William Morris said, "“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Inspiring post, Rue. xo ~ Nancy
ReplyDeleteoh what a fun post!
ReplyDeletei also love the second quote by dorothy draper.
dewena and I both love sister parish. so we decided to each do a post about her. dewena's is wonderful.
mine is wonderful in spots but OH SO WORDY. dear lord. I can never shut up.
but here's my favorite quote from her that I used on my post.
and... ahem. if you'd get a cup of coffee and feel like it... you can find it on the peanut under past posts A to Z...
it's titled 'sister p and my minimalist soul' ... I LOVE her rooms there.
here's her quote...
” it is only my eye that has helped me. i am still hopeless with that thing called a scale ruler. i love color, but that comes very naturally to me. from the beginning i never followed trends. if i was aware of them i didn’t care, for i believed as i do now, that rooms should be timeless and very personal. but i certainly don’t have a “look!” just a mish mash of everything that somehow, by instinct, usually turns out to be a warm, imaginative “living room.” ~ sister
and ...
oh my goodness. that quote that chris k in wisconsin shared... from pierce brown, golden son...
it just touches my soul and brings tears to my eyes. simply and beautifully said.
My interior design professor, 1970, she was 70 something then, and I can't remember her name, but on a weekend field trip to Chicago, she dragged us into the Hancock Building before it was completed, into the Merchandise Mart in 'Closed to public' showrooms and up and down the Gold Coast to view apartments, lobbies and restaurants. A quick trip to the Art Institute to view the miniature rooms and all the antiques. Her energy was boundless, but I remember most is, "Something dark, something light, something dull, something bright…and add texture."
ReplyDeleteI have used that combo on almost every project, floral design, or interior I have worked on since. I think she personally knew everyone of those mentioned above, especially Dorothy Draper. Thanks for the-blast from the past-with my favorite instructor.
I totally agree with all of them!

More pillows, please. And comfort, I want comfort-Me
ReplyDeleteI don't have a quote, I loved all the ones you listed. In the winter I like rearranging my living room because the large window is my vocal point. We love to see the snow come down.
ReplyDeleteHi Rue, great post!! Love the quote by Nancy and Dorothy!! As a decorator, I change things around with the seasons so I guess my quote would be, "have your home reflect who you are in the moment"
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the quotes and great pics. xo
Hi Rue,
ReplyDeleteThey are all good but the one by Albert Hadley is my favorite.....so true!
Have a sweet day.

Hi Rue,
ReplyDeleteWell this was neat! I have always loved to decorate, even when I was a kid my Mom let me tape "decorations" here and there-you can imagine what they looked like! hehehe....well here is a paraphrased quote that fits my style- I don't think that people have enough fun with decorating, it doesn't need to be so serious, it's not a life long commitment-it should be enjoyed and the house should always feel like a home!
Great post-
xo

I like all of them but have always been fascinated by Albert Hadley as he was a local boy and I know his cousin. And of course his most famous design partner Mrs. Parrish--I adored her! I have a small notebook by my bedroom chair where I've written so many of her quotes. They inspire me daily. And basically they all come down to the premise that you have to love your house because love shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm expected upstairs to leave in a few minutes to go down the hill for school clothes shopping - i want to go through these quotes and photos more slowly but i love what I read. Especially about the birds and their nests.
ReplyDeleteAlbert Hadley's quote speaks to me the most. A room can look good in a photo, but be cold and uncomfortable in real life. Definitely words to live by!
ReplyDeleteThe bird theory is my favorite! SO true and quite insightful.
ReplyDeleteI think you can give me a better and nice world. Thanks for sharing like this post.
