Yup, I chose green.
I read everyone's advice and comments (Thank you!!), then I slept on it and then ultimately decided that Margret's original choice was the best one.
The next day I bought Behr's Olivine, which is the darker cousin of the one I have in the kitchen, which is Behr's Sagey.
Here's the before:
And the after:
A few of you said to go blue, but I have a fear of blue in my home, since my parent's house was filled with it during the 1980s.
Remember that trend?
Instead the color I chose pulls out the green in the tiles.
Speaking of the tiles, I have two on my mantel that I found in the dirt, on the side yard, from when they put in the horrid brass screen.
It just breaks my heart that someone would do that.
I'd love to take the thing off, but I'm afraid of what's underneath.
Maybe one day I'll get brave enough.
We'll see.
While I was painting I noticed the slight curve along the side.
I love how art deco it is :)
A few of you said to paint the mirror instead, but I don't paint antiques, remember? ;)
It's really old too.
Some pictures of the whole room...
Now that the fireplace is green, I'm really leaning towards a warm, yet lightish yellow for the walls.
It would be a huge project though and since I have so many other things that need to get finished, I think I'll wait on it for awhile.
A lot of you wanted me to leave the mantel white, but it just didn't feel right to me and I know that colors aren't trendy right now, but...
A) I'm not trendy (obviously!)
B) I'm a color girl
and
C) I prefer cozy and warm.
Anyway, I want people to think of their grandma's house when they walk in and I want them to be comfortable enough to wrap a blanket around them or feel like they can put their feet up if they want to.
That's the kind of home I've always wanted and I think I've accomplished that feeling or I'm at least getting there ;)

Looks good and I am glad you did not paint the gorgeous mirror!
ReplyDeleteI love the color! It looks wonderful and I think the mirror is perfect as is!
ReplyDeleteLinda
It all looks so nice, Rue...If it were me, I would PAINT that brass thingy in front of the fireplace so fast, it would make your head spin. What color is up to you, of course, but I've painted brass and other metals and they turned out so good.

Great color, Rue! I love green, there's something very comforting about the color. I love it in the room right now, if you paint it yellow, it will pop even more. Gorgeous! Enjoy your new view! ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you went with the green. It looks really nice!
ReplyDeleteI think you made the perfect choice! It looks great. I love green, and I love your home! I would definitely feel right at home and comfortable in your home. Have a lovely evening!
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely green! The color of nature, so of course it's a fav of mine. I do love that mirror. And I don't blame you for not wanting to paint it. Your living room is cozy and I wish I could sit there with you and chat!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Very cozy and a touch of yellow will make it homey like you said. But working on the outside comes first. Oh, mauve and grey in the 80-90s too. My brother had those colors all over his house. Kathleen in Az
ReplyDeleteMauve? Yikes! lol
DeleteThank you, Kathleen! xo
Rue, I love the green with the beautiful tiles! Beautiful room!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty room!! I LOVE your mantel green...I painted mine green last year:-)
ReplyDeleteI am with you! I don't paint antiques! I committed to that early on. Especially a beautiful piece like that mirror. GASP!
ReplyDeleteI love the green! It looks great with the pallet now and when you go yellow it will look great too. My walls in our living room are a soft musturdy yellow. It is such a warm glowy room in the afternoons. I never went with the beige trend, although I do love it. I just love having colorful, coordinated, mixed up prints around me.
Have a fabulous week!
~Liz
It's perfect and cozy and warm! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and heartwarming, and the tiles are amazing!
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleterue, it looks wonderful! warm and lovely with the tiles. blue? i don't know...
but green is so soft and so lovely with the tiles. great decision. for sure.
do you know that i saw a winged back chair at a shop nearby that has the
same floral fabric as your rolled arm winged chair? i thought about getting it..
99 buckaroos...but will have to mull over spending the dough.
have to laugh about your "granny" home comment. though your home is
filled with antiques, it is styled in a youthful way with thoughtful vignettes
(love the mantel!). your home is cozy and full of love. and full of YOU.
...and your doggies seem to think so, too.
xxoo
I love the green! I noticed the ceiling that's art deco too.
ReplyDeleteYou've got the 'cozy' down. :) The room looks wonderful. And I love the green mantel.
ReplyDeleteDear Rue, your room is so lovely and I think you certainly made the right choice. Absolutely stunning.
ReplyDeleteOh, and your match stick holder is so charming, I love it :)
gorgeous fireplace ... beautiful floors ... great color choice
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic!! It definitely shows up more in the room now - that is a good thing! - and makes more of the feature that I personally think a fire should be! Great job!! xx
ReplyDeleteI love the new color. The mantle before looked like a primer coat, just waiting to be painted, this color ties the whole room together and looks wonderful! Another great job accomplished in your sweet home.
ReplyDeleteFlowerLady
Love love love love love!! The whole room is just so pretty. Those tiles are the perfect jumping off point for the mantel.
ReplyDeletePerfect shade of green in my view. It really makes those tiles pop! I agree with you and would not paint that antique mirror....
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day
Jeannette
Thank you so much, Jeanette!

Love the green, a perfect choice! Your home is lovely, I'm sure everyone who enters feels like they are wrapped in a warm hug.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to have you back, I look forward to each post!
I really hope they do, Deb :)
DeleteThank you!!
Good choice! I love the way you pulled out the green in the tiles. Bold, but not too daring. Just right, I think. And the green makes the mirror and fireplace cover go even better together. Maybe someday you can take that cover off and paint it to match the mirror's finish? Antique it up, maybe.
ReplyDeleteThe green is much, much better, and I am on the side of being so glad you did not paint the mirror. As for the brass screen, it is very similar to the screen my grandparents added at some point to the fireplace in their bungalow that they started building in the late 1920s, so to me it does come across as being very much a part of a "grandma house"!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the difference -- love how the green makes the fireplace pop! And the mirror is perfect as is. :)
ReplyDeleteI wrote a comment and I'm not sure if I sent it as I was called away, but here it is again. I like your choice for the mantle.
ReplyDeleteThe rest was fluff and I'm sure your're busy. I'll leave the rest for another day! :D
Never too busy, Debbie! Thank you :)
DeleteIt-is-beautiful...
ReplyDeleteYes, just the right bit of a pop of color. And what a beautiful sagey one. I love, love, love sage family colors. ,-)
You must certainly have produced an at-home-feeling room. Yes Ma'am! It's open... But cozy... Not the easiest thing, to make.
Oh and no!!! Do not paint antiques! No. No. No. :-)
Gentle hugs,
Tessa
Well now I've seen the finished result ... IT IS AMAZING ... just love it, what a beautiful room.
ReplyDeleteI can picture myself enjoying a cup of tea in your very restful room.
All the best Jan
LOVE it! The color is perfect - a nice, subtle olivey green. It really makes a difference in the whole room. Great job, Rue!
ReplyDeleteI think the color is nice against the color in the tiles. So unique, all of it. And a very cozy and peaceful room.
ReplyDeleteYeah! I love the green. It is a beautiful shade of green too. It looks warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteLove it Rue. It's kind of an aqua green on my screen and I love it!! It really looks fabulous in your room. So warm and cozy. Brings out the color in the tiles. I've been adding shades of aqua for the season.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous!
Hugs, CM
Love it Rue..I also have to have color in my world..Trends come and go honey..good taste will always be trendy..I had to laugh about the blue from the your Mom;s old home girl I was one of them blue freaks even my carpet matched the sofa, etc..Then I got struck in the mauve trend..no more now I do what makes me feel happy and not what everyone is jumping on the band wagon with..I really don''t care for all white rooms too sterile for me..Again the cookie cutter trend..And you know how I feel about painting antiques..I'm the nut that will buy the painted antique and bring it back to the real finish..
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great Easter with your family my dear young friend..Hugs and smiles Gloria
I love that you're that nut, Gloria lol
DeleteI hope you had a lovely Easter too, my friend!
xoxo
Rue, it turned out to be absolutely beautiful! I love the green -- it just makes everything so warm and inviting! Great, great choice! Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteI would have never said to paint it green -- but you know it brings out the blue better than the white (I know what you said about blue but) . . . it is PERFECT! BTW, I hate what they do to houses and the tiles, oh, the tiles . . . perhaps you can take that horrid thing out some day -- in the meantime, I would be looking for matching/similar tiles for when you do! Have them at the ready! Someday I'll tell you the "dumb" things that they did to Linderhof before we bought her.
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful Rue! And it goes so well with the tiles and everything else in the room! I'm so glad you didn't paint that mirror...it's so beautiful just as it is! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Donnamae!!
Delete:)
You nailed it, Rue! Isn't it amazing how painting that one thing pulled the room together? Your instincts were right, always trust them.
ReplyDeleteI can picture visiting this room and sitting there feeling warm and cozy, but I'd soon want to be up and look at that wonderful kitchen of yours too!
Well, I was wrong! I believe I was in the "leave it white" camp, but I have to say it looks fabulous in green!
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful Rue!
ReplyDeleteI'm finally trying to visit a little. It sure feels good to be back! Missed everything about blogging, while all the excitement was going on.:-)
Love the color of the fireplace, Rue. It's such a warm green, and really looks nice. Your living room is charming, and I'm so glad you didn't paint that antique mirror, it's gorgeous the way it is. I am not into trends or fads, so we have something in common. In fact, when they come around, I run the other way. :~) I actually think blue in the home is so pretty, but I don't have too much of it myself. I smiled when you said your mom's house was full of it.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job, and everything looks so nice.
~Sheri
I don't think you could have possibly chosen a nicer shade of green Rue, and it's also just the right intensity. Not too light, not too dark...just right :). When you get around to painting the walls, a pale yellow will look lovely for sure. I had lots of pale yellow in our previous home of 26 years and I never tired of it.
ReplyDeleteRue,
ReplyDeleteYou have such an eye for color and this shade of green is truly perfect. Like Doreen, our home of many years had an ever so soft shade of yellow. I chose that shade because I wanted everyone who entered our home to feel welcome and warm. I like how you have defined what you want your home to represent-that is such a good thing.
xoxo

Oh Rue, the green was a perfect choice. Love it with your tiles. BTW, the mirror above the fireplace is gorgeous and I'm so glad that you didn't paint it. :)
ReplyDeleteThat green looks wonderful! :)
ReplyDeleteGrandma's house indeed :)
It looks great! I think you have definitely accomplished your goal of having a cozy home, Rue!
ReplyDeleteLove the green! All but two rooms in my house are either yellow, blue or one of two shades of green. The exceptions being my sewing room is pink (I have all boys and never got to have pink when they were at home) and one guest room is painted khaki so I could use my red/white/blue theme in there.
ReplyDeleteWow Rue...I love your living room it is so warm and cozy I feeling like curly up on your couch with a good book and a cup of tea..... The green you picked for your fireplace is perfect...AND I love the mirror above it!!

Julie @ Love My Simple Home
What a beautiful room, so inviting.
ReplyDeleteRue,
ReplyDeleteYou chose and painted the perfect shade of green on your mantel, which, as you say, matches the green in the tiles. Yes, I agree; although white is clean and crisp and safe, colour is fun and cozy and interesting! Beautiful!

LOVE LOVE LOVE. ALL. ALL. ALL.
ReplyDeleteThis house is so YOU... I just love your soul shining through here dear one.
And yes, I think a shade of yellow on the walls would be so pretty.
But of course. ;-)
Love you.
Love you, Kim :)
DeleteThank you all so much! It was a hard decision.
