Dog Barf Burritos

Yes, I know what you're thinking.....
Dog Barf? What kind of name is that?!

Well, at least those of you that were brave enough to click on this post.

This recipe happens to come from an old family friend named Doug.

Legend has it that one day, when he was a kid, his mother was cooking dinner and he looked into the pan and said, "That looks like dog barf!"

Eventually, he gave the recipe to my mom and she kept the name.

My family and their friends have an odd sense of humor.

His last name is blanked out, because some years later he became the mayor of a small town in California.

Yes kids, you're looking at a celebrity's recipe.

Well, kind of ;)

Some of you may remember this recipe from my old blog. My apologies if you tried to make it and the rice never seemed to cook as fast as the recipe said it would.

Mom "forgot" to tell me and my brother that "rice" meant Minute Rice and not regular long grain rice.

Of course, we didn't figure this out until about 2 years ago when she was making it and we noticed the box of rice she was using.

I think she likes to do things like that, even though she says it's an innocent mistake.

Sure mom.

Whatever you say.

Anyway, it really is as easy as it looks and I swear it tastes better than it sounds. Even picky kids will eat it.

Well, except my daughter Annie, that doesn't like ground beef.

Weird kid.

Just brown the meat and throw in the rest of the ingredients. I add a little salt and pepper to mine.

Stir it up.

Let it simmer for 30 minutes.

And the finished product should look like this:

I guess you can see why a little kid would come up with the name.

Or not.

Lastly, wrap a scoop of it up in a warm tortilla and serve.

You can add all kinds of things to it, like cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, etc., but I like mine plain most of the time.

Sorry about the bite taken out, but we were already eating when I remembered to take a picture.

I promise I'll get better at this.

Hey, at least this time I took an after picture.

Don't judge me!

;)

  3. Gotta agree with Annie, I'm not a ground beef person. Now ground turkey sometimes. But it's so expensive you can hardly afford it for turkey chili. But that name will be one I shall never forget!

  4. These burritos look delicious!!! And easy!!! I am absolutely going to make this recipe. This is completely my thing! Will probably add cheese and sour cream, two of my favorite toppings. Wish I had time to run to the store for the ingredients and make it tonight. Also, the history behind this recipe is really funny, so glad you shared it.

    1. I wouldn't quite call it Mexican food lol Although, in the 60s it might have been.

Have a happy evening, Vicky :)

  7. The name of this recipe is hilarious - I admit, it got my attention! I'm not much of a ground beef fan either (see? your daughter's not so weird after all...unless we're both weird)...I eat mostly vegetarian and I also don't "do" Minute Rice, but I have to admit...this dog barf concoction looks pretty darn good at the end! I bet my college son would like these and easy enough recipe where he could even make them himself.

    1. I suppose she's not that weird ;)

I normally don't do minute rice normally either, but I learned a long time ago, not to mess to much with the old recipes. They never taste the same.

  8. I have to agree, some pics of food after cooking look like barf. I really believe that magazine stylists use mostly the ingredients BEFORE cooking when the colors look edible. And hey! The best recipes are the simplest! Thanks!

  9. Rue, these burritos look so good. What a cute story of a recipe that was passed down from an old family friend. It kind of looks like spaghetti sauce. Yummy burritos.

  11. This recipe reminds me of my Sloppy Joe recipe, which I've never thought to put in a burrito before. And now, that's kind of all I want :) Definitely going to give this one a try Rue! Have a great weekend!

  12. Yummy, yummy, and I love the name - hilarious! When my mom discovered the food processor in the mid/late 1970's, she PROUDLY made a dish called "Garbage Stew" - she coined the name herself! She would literally take whatever was leftover in the fridge and process it in the food processor and add a little liquid (usually water) and then heat it up like soup - OMG - it was disgusting! She was a horrible cook. Some family members ate it, but I think me and my brother would rather starve. I mean, seriously, I watched her cram left over pancakes, steak, corn, oatmeal, cheese, bread...whatever the hell she could dig out of the fridge and process it! I think the new toy made her feel "fancy" like a real chef. My poor dad, grew up in the depression, half starved up till age 17, and I think he found any food on his plate wonderful. Thanks for the post - enjoyed it!!

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
