When it rains...

Soooooo......

See this light fixture?

It has a twin that used to be where this hole is.

When I came back from camping last weekend, it was raining hard and I was on the phone with my mom telling her about the trip, when suddenly I heard a big splash. I turned my head to see my original 30s kitchen light fixture hanging by electrical wires and rain pouring through the hole.

Now when I say pouring, what I mean is that I had my own personal waterfall.

Amazingly enough, Bubba was in his bed one foot away under the island, and didn't seem to care. He just slept through it.

Weirdo.

So, I somewhat calmly told my mother to hang on (calmly because she'd panic) while I grabbed my trusty stool and carefully unscrewed the glass part, so that it wouldn't break.

Lucky it didn't and by some sort of miracle I didn't get electrocuted.

Yeah, I know, but that fixture is important to me.

Then I got off the phone and called the insurance company.... then the company that was supposed to fix the leak in the first place..... and then eventually my new electrician/plumber/ handyman.

He was the only one with a brain.

Shocker!

He came out an hour later, took the remaining fixture down and preceded to tell me that there's a gaping hole in my roof about 6 inches by 10 inches.

Lovely.

Luckily, he knew how to fix the leak and is coming back to put more shingles on.

Guess what else?

My electric water heater died.

That had to be fixed too.

And to top it off I'm sick with some weird stomach/flu/icky thing.

When it rains it pours.

Oddly enough my friend, Kim had a leak as well. I know just how thrilled she is that we have that in common ;)

So, I apologize for this post, but I'm a little grumpy.

Now I'm going to go watch Coming to America and try not to think about all of this.

And eat chocolate Easter eggs.

Don't judge me ;)

PS

Thank you for being so kind to Jessica. You guys are the best!

  1. Hey Rue..so sorry about the leak. That light fixture looks so familiar to me and I don't know if I've lived in a house with something like it or it has just stuck in my head from something in the past I've seen. I guess I have a good eye. huh! So glad you are around to tell this story.

I'll have a post up tomorrow that will make your leak look like a drip.

Best wishes and don't do any more heroic acts around live wires. Bubba needs you.

  2. Rue, bless Bubba's heart. I had leaks, too. Thanks to the ice storm, I've got a gaping hole in the master ceiling, and the guest room ceiling took a beating, too. Just waiting to see what else this house will throw at me. I'm glad you were't electrocuted--but glad you saved the vintage fixture. xx

  3. What's a little electrocution when a vintage fixture is at stake? You're a girl after my own heart.

Seems so many of us are having grumpy weeks, and a few chocolate eggs are as good a cure as any in my book.

  5. Rue, I understand the importance of saving the light fixture, so glad you weren't hurt. I too had a series of 3"s that happened a while back, so over them or so I hope. I need smooth sailing for a while. I hope this finds you feeling better. fondly ~lynne~

  6. No judgments here! I'd be scarfing those chocolate eggs. Why is it that crummy things often happen all at once? I hope you feel better asap!

  7. No judgement from a homeowner who once unscrewed the front panel of a vintage stove......while it was plugged in. She got quite a scare when something popped and the walls around the stove turned black, but luckily she survived. I'm glad you survived and your vintage light fixture was saved. So sorry you've got to spend your fun money on home repairs! Chocolate is known for its healing properties, so you may want to purchase another bag. I hope you feel better soon!

  17. Hi Rue, yes, when it rains it pours. So sorry about your leak and the water heater. We are dealing with a leak too in a bedroom closet. It seems the ice we had filled a gutter with leaves and froze causing the water to seep through a small crack and right into the house. Hubby went on the roof today, worked on the gutter and sealed the area. No more water leaks now.
Sure hope you get to feeling better soon too. Chocolate is the best medicine.
Have a better rest of the weekend.
    Hugs, CM

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
