Love my chenille

Awhile back I was in a junk shop (big shock, I'm sure ;) ) and as I was looking through a bunch of blankets and pillows from the 1980s, I came across a chenille bedspread.

It was white with pink, green and yellow accents and my heart skipped a beat.

I'd been looking for the perfect one for my bedroom and this was just too good to be true.

It didn't have a size and it didn't have a price tag.

Would it fit?

How much was it?

With anticipation and hope in my heart, I went up to the shop owner and asked.

She told me it was a queen (Perfect!) and that it was 50 dollars, but because I had purchased some other things before and because there was a couple of tiny holes in it, that I could have it for 25.

I practically threw the money at her and ran out of the shop lol

In reality, I thanked her so much you would have thought she had given me a priceless antique.

Well, maybe it's not an antique, but it is old and besides, it's priceless to me ;)

Before I take it off my bed for the cooler months, I thought I'd show it off.

Sorry about the rumples, but Bubba kept playing around on it, before I took the pictures, and every time I tried to smooth it out, he thought it was a game :)

Here it is kind of smoothed out...

I know no one makes their bed like this anymore, but this is how these covers are supposed to be used.

Besides, I don't really do anything like anyone else, now do I? ;)

See how the design matches up as it goes over the pillows?

I LOVE it!

And so does Bubba ;)

In fact, every time I make my bed in the morning, I'm still doing a little happy dance :)

Have you finally found something you've been looking for recently, that makes your heart skip a beat?

PS

I've been busy catching up with all of you, but it's taking awhile, so please have patience with me.

I will get there.

I promise :)

  5. It is just gorgeous!!

There was an old-fashioned chenille EXACTLY like the one that my mom used to have at our local mission store a few months back. Some of the ladies that price this stuff know the value...they wanted 30.00 for it / labeled it as vintage :)

Granted that seems a good value on one side of the coin, and expensive on the other...but they have discounted days off and on. This one was just plain. You snagged a beauty!!

  7. I love it so much, Rue. Good for you. I am so happy you found this special treasure. I have not recently found a special item other than a cute coffee cup. I am always on the look out for special ones from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Kathi

  11. Wow, that's a beautiful bedspread! I had a chenille bedspread when I was a kid (and yes, it went up over the pillows like that - totally forgot about that!), but mine didn't have a colorful design on it like yours does.

  12. It's a beautiful bedspread. We always had white ones and I still make my bed with a white one -- which washes because the dogs get prints on it! But that's okay! I like that you do things the old fashioned way. We need more of that!

  13. So pretty and yes, making the bed with the bedspread over the pillows was something my mom taught us too. Bubba is a love and our little ones like to help make the bed too. Kathleen in Az

  19. Visiting by way of your spot light over at Kris' place.... By the way it was a beautiful post getting to know you.
And your nick-name Rue? Is the same nick name my son had at about 2 1/2 years old, he loved Pooh and for some reason his cousin called him buddy Rue and rue stuck.
I love the name, it has fond growing up memories of my son.

Love your site and will enjoy getting to know you better.

  20. Good Morning Rue, I have popped over to visit you after visiting Kris' as I wanted to let you know I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. I have a neice name Rue, but her nickname came about because her sisiter could not pronounce her name Ruth and so it stuck with all of us.
You took me back with your chenille bedspread.... my husband's grandparents gave us a pink chenille bedspread, as a wedding present when we married in 1970 and yes, we made our bed in exactly the same way as you.
I love the fact that you don't allow fashion to dictate your style of living and that you are your own person. I have travelled a lot during my lifetime and my home is very eclectic and I feel very interesting, I love the memories which each piece evokes.
It's been lovely to meet you and I will certainly be popping by again.
    Best Wishes from England.

  21. I love when I find something amazing for the home. I was at a antique store the other day and picked up the cutest turquoise jewelry holder. I saw it, loved it, but didn't pick it up. After 10 minutes of wandering around the store (and thinking about the jewelry holder the whole time) I had to snag it. Now, it looks perfect on my dresser and I love its uniqueness. The older I get, the more I appreciate unique :) Hope you have a great weekend Rue! :)

  22. Good morning Rue! I am here via Kris's spotlight but I had started to enjoy following your posts, but then this week, BACK TO SCHOOL set in and I have been running around like a fool! How lovely to see your cottage; you live in Arizona? Your home is very similar to the homes here in Minneapolis, and there is so much Snow White/fairytale character in your house! I really enjoy that you live in the style of the past. It is a comforting style and your homestead is the perfect backdrop for it all. Enjoy your weekend! Anita

  23. Oh Rue! I just saw that you visited my blog post! Thank you.

Yes, there is a bittersweet tone in most of what I write about, because like you, I long for something from the simple past: more human connection. Like you, I am not tied to my phone. WHO HAS THE TIME? I work very hard in my teaching job and have absolutely no time to keep connected on all levels, but what I enjoy is that human contact, that rush of LIFE that only eye-to-eye or the presence of the human spirit can bring.

Thank you for coming by, and I am thrilled to visit you. I am taking it easy this weekend. Another "peeve" I have is how rushed life is on the job. Ridiculous. But, we can make little sparks of joy happen in what we do, so I choose that. PEACE

Just came over from Junk Chic.........nice to meet you here in blogland. I enjoyed your post.
Also enjoyed your beautiful chenille bedspread............I remember those.....my Mom had several and they were just
beautiful. One had a big basket of flowers on it..........I remember it cause there was a pic of me and my brother
sitting on the bed in our jamies..........lol

    Have a great week,

  25. Hi Rue, you hit the jackpot. I love a chenille bedspread too and the one you found is gorgeous. It looks beautiful with your furniture and Bubba seems to think so too. These spreads will always hold a soft spot for me having grown up with them. The vintage styles are a treasure to fine but I am seeing them in stores once again as they are making a comeback. Time repeats itself, but the designs are just not the same. Enjoy and have a nice holiday weekend.

I am so happy that this makes you happy, my Dear. It is lovely to see a person, who still enjoys older things and ways of doing things.

  37. Hi!
I came over from Kris's blog. It seems as though I do remember you for some reason...perhaps that the two of us are not "the usual" ~ :) I love the chenille spread! I grew up with those and such fond memories. I think all my aunts, my grandmother and mother had them. So soft! It looks beautiful with your furniture and Bubba is adorable. I have one dog, a Shih Tzu rescue ~ the best boy ever! He's very old now and I just love on him and spoil him.

I'm a new follower and I look forward to getting to know you...again. Stop by and say "hi" when you can!

  40. Hi Rue,

I love it...so comfy looking and I remember these spreads with such love.

I really like that you are different. I think of myself like this also. I have never really understand why women would want to follow the latest trends. I think being an individual with your own style is so much more fun. :-)

Hope your Labor Day is grand.

  41. Rue, this is the way beds are made in almost all the UK and European magazines!

It is a beautiful design and reminds me of all the road trips through GA to visit my SC grandmother when I was a child. All along the roads from Chattanooga to Dalton GA I would see these works of art for sale, hung on clotheslines.

I loved seeing you at Kris' today!

    1. Dewena,
The chenille blankets that you are talking about are quite valuable now because they had "hand pulled" threads. They are thick and fluffy. I'm glad you pointed this out, because they are so fabulous.

  48. Your bedroom is such a pretty color and so neat! I tend to junk up our bedroom as it seems easy to open the door chuck something in and close the door. I noticed you don't have a lot of collections or are you a closet hider/ lol I have way to much stuff, but seem to love it cause I can't seem to stop collecting!

    1. Hi Sue :)

I tend to do that with my office. In fact, it took me about 3 hours the other day to get it in a human looking condition.

Actually I just don't have a lot of stuff in that room, but if you look through the pictures of the rest of my house, you'll definitely see a lot of stuff ;)

But, I'm not so much a collector as I am a preservationist that tries to use things the way they were meant to be used, like my pyrex from the 1940s. I use it all the time to hold leftovers and to cook or mix with. Not to say that I don't have brick-a-brac, I most definitely do ;)

  54. Beautiful! I remember taking naps at my grandmother's and having the imprint of the bedspread on my face when I got up. I actually have a crib size one that says Baby on it - was hubby's when he was a baby and I used it for my boys. It is stored in a cedar chest waiting to be pulled out to use for grandchildren. Maybe I should just pull it out and leave it folded on the end of one of the beds - no signs of grandchildren anywhere on the horizon!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  55. I have vintage chenille spreads on all three of the old beds in our home, and one of them is made with the spread folded over the pillows as you've done. One of mine is a twin spread that I use on a full size bed. I added a dust ruffle and pillow shams and it looks fine. My Baba always had a chenille spread on her bed and they remind me of her. Yours is a lovely pattern and looks to be in perfect condition! I'm lazy and they stay on the beds all year long. I just fold a quilt at the foot of the bed in the winter.

Congrats on the feature at Junk Chic Cottage!
