Thoughts and a Thank you

As most of you know, aside from a few sporadic posts, I pretty much took a break from blogging, a little over a year ago.

In the last few months since I've been back, I've noticed a few things that I'd like to touch on and before some of you get pissy...

 please hear me out.

So, here they are...

1. A lot of you have decided to use Instagram and have pretty much left your blogs abandoned.

Now, I don't use IG, but from what I've heard, I kind of understand the pull.

Upload a quick photo.

Maybe, write a sentence or two.

And voila!

Done.

But, what about the story?

How can you convey everything you want to say or make people feel a certain way, in only a few words?

What about those weirdos, like me, that don't use it?

Not that it's all about me ;)

I get it though.

It's quick and easy.

But...

I miss reading your thoughts and stories.

And you in general.

2. Vlogging has apparently become a new way to blog.

In fact, one of my favorite blogs that has been around for years and years, decided to go the way of vlogging.

That blog (which shall remain nameless) was an old-fashioned respite from the world.

Now...

it's not.

She says it's easier.

I understand that, because her posts were really extensive and took hours to write.

I know this, because my posts are rarely as long as hers and they take an average of 2-4 hours.

Anyone that has written a post like that, knows what I'm talking about.

It's a lot of work and there's a lot of thought put into it.

And if she's anything like my crazy OCD self, there's at least another hour or two of proof reading the thing over and over, before clicking the publish button and then worrying for hours afterwards if it's good enough.

That could just be me though ;)

I will say that adding a video of you to your blog can be fun, because your readers get to see you in motion and/or they can hear your voice.

Not that I'm going to do it anytime soon.

But to turn the whole thing into a vlog?

Meh.

She wasn't one to leave comments on other blogs or comment back to her readers very often, and although I usually don't bother with bloggers like that, she took charming photos and there was something special about the way she wrote.

It felt like you were on a vacation from your life.

Obviously, it's her choice and she probably doesn't give a hoot about my thoughts, but...

I miss it.

3. Some of you have made your blogs private.

This I can understand, because blogging can be time consuming and sometimes rough.

Not every blogger has the time or inclination to keep it going when tragedy strikes or life gets crazy and not every commenter is nice.

I've seen major breakdowns and I've seen some incredibly nasty comments.

I also know that it can take over your life, it can be very time consuming, and discouraging when you don't get what you want out of it.

Whatever that might be.

So, I get it.

But, I hope you change your mind, because...

I miss you.

4. And lastly, quite a few of you have gone on a blogging break.

Again, I understand.

For all the above reasons and so much more.

I've done it twice.

But, I hope you come back eventually, like I did, because...

I miss you, too.

So, with all that said...

Please understand that I know it's your blog and you can do whatever you want with it.

I'm not mad at you, or judging you, or your reasons.

Although it looks like Bubba and Mini are....

I'm just saying that I'm not a fan of all these changes.

After blogging off and on for almost a decade, you'd think I'd get used to it, because I know change is inevitable.

Bloggers come and go, and if you're lucky, sometimes they say goodbye, before disappearing into the void.

Like everyday life.

Basically...

I just really miss visiting my friends that have left for one reason or another and selfishly or not, I want you to come back.

Please :)

Well, maybe you won't, but it was worth a try, right?

;)

Anyway, speaking of friends...

I know this is way overdue, but I owe you a big thank you.

During the time that I was gone, I received a lot of emails and comments, involving thoughts, prayers and well wishes.

It took a very long time, but I think I've read most of them now.

Some of you even contacted my dear friend, Brenda, a few times to make sure I was still alive.

And being the sweetheart she is, she picked up the phone and let me know that I was missed.

It actually took a few calls, but eventually I came back.

So...

thank you.

To all my friends.

The ones that have blogs and the ones that don't have blogs.

All of you touched my heart in one form or another.

 You really, truly did.

And...

I missed you too.

love
rue

  1. Hi Rue, Brenda has been a very good blogger friend who tells life like it is for her in her truly excellent way. I have learned so many things from her over the years and appreciate the way she shares skills, thoughts, books, gardening, her life. I read all your posts with appreciation and I know I do not comment enough. I appreciate the way you share your thoughts and photos and the dogs too. One thing that is getting tougher in the blogger world is how fancy the front pages are, hard to navigate and figure out and I often just give up and move on to read someone elses post. Too sophisticated for me. There are still a great many good blogging friends writing and I enjoy visiting them when they post (I have a huge blog list on my blog). So, when you post, I read and enjoy and learn. Thank you Rue.

  2. OH geez! Don't change ONE thing about your blog! I share it with my husband and sister - we LOVE all of the pictures and thoughts. We have six dogs and four cats - always something going on!That one picture a couple days ago you shared of all dogs begging - that could be our house . . . . *None of my business here - but hold on to a guy who loves animals like your fella does:)

  3. I have kept my blog and will continue to do so. I had also noticed the Instagram phase, but not interested in it. My blog posts are so varied, and not around a theme like some I follow. That is because my mind tends to wander too much! I have enjoyed your blog and understand needing breaks from time to time. Sometimes I have medical problems that set it aside (as in the past year), sometimes I get very busy, and sometimes the muse abandons me. I mostly enjoy sharing my photography and poetry or thoughts. I enjoy the variety of blogs I can follow and read.

  4. First, was that little yellow toy peeping over the arm of the chair yours or one of the 4 legged characters? 😉 Second, I'm so glad you are back. Your blog is a beautiful respite from the chaos of life. You are right with some of the changes. It's like receiving a hand written letter vs. another email in your inbox. Easy doesn't always mean better, though I too understand why some have moved that direction. Have a beautiful day.

  5. I don't do Instagram, and vlogging or whatever it's called will never get me back to a blog. If it's no longer blogging, they've lost me. Just put it out there plain and simple.

  6. Rue, I'm a newbie to your blog and thrilled that you have come back to blog again. I can see that I've missed much not knowing you before now. I've been blogging since 2009. Yikes! I can't believe I've kept it up all these years, much less that someone reads what I write. ;-)
I have begun to use IG more and more, but it doesn't take the place of my blog. I find that it's another time consumer though. Like you, it also takes me hours to put together a blog post. Sometimes I question why I'm using my time for blogging, but the answer is always the friendships that blogging has brought into my life. I've met so many wonderful like minded individuals who share many of my interests. It fun and it's a creative outlet.

  7. nodding my head in agreement and quite honestly i could add a few more points but will be quiet on that front. but. i agree. totally. i really don't understand instagram. social media is overall quite superficial as it is .. instagram, in my view, makes it moreso. just my opinion. opinions are sometimes like stinky armpits. everybody's got one some time or 'nuther.

i toy with leaving blogdom .. but something pulls me back time and again.

i'm glad you came back. truly. ♥

  10. So glad you came back to blogging dear Rue. I love reading about your life and seeing your photos. I've been blogging since 2008. I don't do instagram, FB, twitter, etc. I don't do themes that seem to be so popular these days. I like real, down to earth blogs. I don't blog as much as I used to, but then, my life has changed so much since losing my dear husband 4 years and almost 4 months ago. Blogging was very good therapy for grieving and I am so thankful to all who have loved, encouraged and prayed for me. I do enjoy sharing my humble, weedy gardens, my thoughts on life, and crafting.

Keep on being yourself dear Rue. You are a joy to follow. Love & hugs ~ FlowerLady

  11. Rue, I found your blog AFTER you came back. The reason I found it is because someone asked where you disappeared to and then you were found and so many people who were already your "old" blogging friends were so thrilled to know you were back. I had to check you out. I haven't missed a post since. I think this post was very well said. Sandra

  14. Rue, anyone who does hear you out in this post will know the spirit in which you wrote it--and I'm so glad that you came back!

My kids signed me in to IG and I'm sorry but I just don't get it, doesn't hold my interest at all. However, as my daughter and one of my sons--both of whom are in television careers--have told me, Everything is changing and will keep changing. Young people don't watch regular television anymore, they get it all through online choices. I'm told that we won't even recognize television in 10 years. For someone like me who can barely figure out my DVD player and the only way I can cope with our new Comcast service is through voice command, which I have to admit is a pretty cool thing, that is scary.

I guess each generation of bloggers will change it in some way. I hope not too soon or too overwhelmingly. I too miss certain bloggers, one is my oldest blogging buddy and I wish so much she'd come back. Thank God for emails though!

  15. I'm so thrilled you brought this subject out in the open! I have been so disappointed that so many of my favorite bloggers have basically just quit, with some of them not even saying goodbye, just leaving us hanging for months. I understand the instagram phase being easy but some of us felt real connections with those favorite bloggers. I also understand some of the nasty comments bothering them, but I'm positive the good outweighs the bad and should realize the negative commenters only make themselves look bad. Needless to say I am so happy you are back and maybe this will influence some of the others to come back too. Thank you!!!

  16. Dear Rue, I love your old-fashioned ways! Keep pulling us back, okay? I am one of those who have gone mostly to Instagram, but I do get weary of the "Instagram Vibe" sometimes. It is a little overwhelming how many pictures people post and how busy they appear to be. Sometimes it feels like a big brag fest. It IS easy to use and the people I've met there are so nice. But sometimes I need a break from it. Sometimes I long for the old blogging days. Maybe if I didn't have Instagram I would blog a lot more like I did then. My blog is not a decorator blog or a food blog or anything. Just bits of my life and what's important to me. I do find the time it takes to post to my blog is soooo long (hours like you said), and that discourages me from posting. But maybe this push by the lovely Rue will get me posting more often? We'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, what a great post! I've had many of those same thoughts and often wonder WHY? I don't and won't use Instagram. Someone told me I should be using it and I tried it, set up an account, put the ap on my phone and I hated it! I removed the ap...and deleted my account. I don't have time for that kind of stuff. In the past, I spent way too much time on the computer...piddling around with different sites and commenting and posting and saving photos. I don't want to do that anymore. My blog is enough for me. That and an occasional facebook visit...and post. One of my biggest things is the bloggers that don't take the time to comment - because they have too many comments - too many "friends". I don't bother commenting on their blogs anymore. And while I'm at it, I must admit, I don't always comment on blogs I read and visit. When I have something to say, I say it...if I don't, I don't comment at all. I don't get alot of comments on my blog...get alot of readers though, so I know others do the same thing. That's OK with me. I was one of those who was so happy to see you return to your blog. I missed YOU.

  18. Agree on every point. I miss bloggers like you. And it seems that so many who still blog have so many ads popping up all over the page that it's painful to read them. And the ones who quit blogging without a goodbye? To me that's as rude as abruptly walking out on a conversation. No you're technically not beholden to your readers, but they did spend their time reading you, and they deserve a thank-you anyway.

    1. Very good points. It really is rude to the readers and I also agree about the pop ups and advertising, so frustrating.

      Delete
    2. I'm another blogger who can't stand ads - especially the pop-up ones! Makes me leave the blog immediately.

      Delete
    3. I feel the same about the pop-ups, ads that appear on every picture, then another popup at the bottom, a Hello Bar on the top, it's just too much. I don't have a problem with a few ads, but I am trying very hard never to go that route with my blog.

      Delete
    4. I don't like any adds, on blogs.

After all, how much money can be made with them???????? If everyone is doing it?

Is that pittance worth turning off regular readers?

  20. I'm new to your blog, but agree with you regarding IG. I don't have it and I am not going to get it. I don't post every week, but try to post at least once a month. It take me about 2 - 4 hours. I do enjoy following blogs, but the ones that never comment back, I let go. I always comment when I read a post. So I have to agree with your points of view.

  21. I don't like change either and even though I've only been doing this four short years, I too have seen them. Instagram is pretty and I do enjoy the pictures, but I am a writer and reader. I love to spill words onto the paper at length and I like to dig into a post and read. I don't like TV, so I would never watch a vlog and as for disappearing friends, yup, not fun. I understand, but I worry...anyway, love the shot of the dogs. Totally judging. Ps...gorgeous shot of you my friend.

  22. Well said Rue. I prefer to blog, no vlog and I don't do Instagram. I love getting wordy and sharing. I started blogging in 2008 or 2009 and never had any followers until I retired and was able to follow some myself. I have enjoyed getting to know others, seeing what they see through their pics and sharing their life. Thanks for your words.

  23. Hi Rue, I'm so glad you are back! I was so thrilled to see your first post back in February (I'm sorry I haven't commented until now). I hear you about Instagram. I do have an IG account and I do post there occasionally, but even though I enjoy the pretty pictures, I find it limited and unsatisfying--- you really have to dig around to find any links to blogs and websites if you want more info about the person posting or just want to read/see more of their work. I can see that the blogging world has really changed in the few short years that I have been blogging (I admit I've never looked/viewed/read a vlog). It seems like blogging and social media in general has become a merry-go-round spinning faster and faster and you don't dare get off, because if you do-- you're a bad person and a failure. Ugh, so exhausting! I'm also not a fan of the minimalist look that many bloggers have adopted for their blog's look and format.

Anyway, I enjoyed this post (as I enjoy all your posts). You've inspired me to get myself in gear and try to get back to blogging myself!

Have a great rest of the week!

She moved across her state for a new job and to be closer to her children. She posted a few after the move and after that, nothing and darn it, I miss her and her blog. A few others I read have posted off and on, but I do know that they have big changes in their lives too. So I get that. I do not have IG and some want to go private too. I will miss them. 26. What a great post! I miss the blogging days of the past. I started mine in 2007 (will be 10 years in July!) I used to have many that I made sure to read daily - many of those just disappeared. :( I did take a break from my blog for a bit (for personal reasons) and when I came back so much had changed! I'm still trying to figure some of it out. Like you, I spend a lot of time on a post. I can't believe I used to post every day. Now I'm lucky to get a couple of posts in each month - I wish I could do more.

  27. Rue, I get what you are saying about the blogs. I am guilty of not posting as much as I should or could, but I always come back. I love blogs that are about every day life and can't stand the ones that are full of pomp and circumstance. Anyhow, I get it because I feel the same way.

LoL...I was one of those who reached out to Brenda when you were away! She lives in the same town I do, BTW. Don't get over to see her like I should, though.

I've been trying instagram...I can't stay in the swing of it because I like to talk too much AND to know what's going on with other people. Call me a perv, but I like looking in homes, knowing what's going on in someone's head and like chatting in general. I don't know thing one about vlogging and will not take the time to find out...just like that periscope stuff. Not for me. I've also given Tweeter a run, yes I know it's Twitter, but can't seem to get the hang of that either, LOL. So, I will stick to the blog, take breaks when I need to, return when I can and continue to chat with friends like you!! Love you sweet lady...I miss you when I'm away and miss you when you are away! 30. Good Morning Rue, What a brilliant post. What I would add is that sometimes, our lives do have to come first... and without getting into the details, I had to take a blogging break last year. I did say I would be away, but it turned out to be longer than I had intended. Some things must remain private.... maybe that is the English in me.
The blogs I have stopped reading are the one's with all the adverts. I appreciate that some bloggers want or need to make money from their blog, but when I am trying to read an article and adverts pop up, it is so distracting.... and the one's I can't navigate, well I just give up.
We all read the blogs we love and return again and again and so it is disappointing when the writer disappears... but maybe their personal lives have become too busy. Sometimes I admit, I will miss one of your posts, but that is because I genuinely don't have the time to read all the blogs I love... but I always return, because I really enjoy reading about what you have been up to.
Never mind instagram, I set up a Facebook page for Ivy, Phyllis and Me!.... and I am absolute rubbish at it.... I just forget to post on FB what I write about, so I have decided to ignore everything else and focus on my blog, as that is what I love doing.
    Best Wishes to you.
    Daphne

  31. First off thank you so much for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. I totally get this post from both sides. I do use instagram and I love it but I love blogging as well. Every time I take a break and return I realize the void those words and pictures leave when I don't post. It does take me a couple of hours as well but it's a mostly enjoyable process (I don't always love editing photos, love taking them but all that sizing business, not so much). For me it's about getting back in the habit so I've put it in my planner and when the day to blog comes, if I have something to share I do and if I don't I don't pressure myself. I tried to make my blog a "business" last year and nearly destroyed why I blog in the process. Sorry, I just wrote my next post in your comments...ha, ha! All those words to say, I love your blog because it's a piece of your heart. That's why I started blogging and that's why I always return. Patty

  33. I have an ebb and flow kinda relationship with my blog. Sometimes I'm really inspired to post and other times I feel like shutting her down. I think with this scary world we live in, I feel nervous having so much of my private life posted on line for everyone to see. Also, when I get down with the difficult times in life, I lose my inspiration. That being said, I agree with you on the disappointment that so many blogs have shut down, gone to Instagram or turned into Vlogs. I also do not care for the blogs that are just too filled with adds and bells and whistles. I personally pass by blogs that make me click to read more or are so covered with adds that I'm lost as to what's the post and what's an ad. It's so much easier to read a whole store when it's all on page one. I do miss the old days when I first started in 2007. I enjoyed the pen pal relationship and really making friends. I am on Facebook, which is very personal with actual conversations. I tried Instagram, but missed the more personal touch. Keep doing what you're doing. It's so fun to see what you are up to. I loved your morning post and I think I'm going to do one too. :)

  39. Ha! Well, believe it or not, just a few hours ago, I decided to open an IG account, at the persistence of my daughter, who recommended it as an extra forum for my pics, when travelling or visiting friends/family doesn't allow time to compose a blog post in my style. So, I can't really defend or attack it, too soon for that. But, as far as blogging goes, Poppy View is my little paradise in cyberspace, it's where I get to chat with my amazing readers, many of whom have become very close friends, despite the fact that I have not met them - yet. I don't know what the future holds for me and IG, since I enjoy writing just as much as taking pics, and IG is not the place for the former. So, I'll be sticking around for a while, and hope my readers will be, too.

  40. Oh I'm with you on the IG thing. Being a professional photographer, I never really cared for it, which is why I don't use it. I have had my blog since 2006 {I like the old-school character of Blogger} and love the way we can personalize it. {Just like MySpace before FB, which I don't use much either}. And to me, nothing beats a flesh and bone journal book to hold in your hand while writing...and the satisfying sound of closing it after we have written our prose. Nothing worth while is easy, right? Wonderful post and love the way you incorporate the dogs with the story. Keep up the great work!

  41. Great post! I am on Instagram but it doesn't take the place of blogging for me. It's just another form of social media that I prefer to Facebook because it requires posting a photo each time. I enjoy posting photos of little things that aren't necessarily something I would share on my blog. Not as much drama as Facebook wither which is a good thing...lol! I backed off from posting as much for a while on the blog because I didn't feel I had much to share. But then I decided, who cares? I just share whatever I want and hope my friends enjoy it somewhat. I enjoy the connections I have made with so many wonderful ladies (of all ages) whom I now consider friends. It's a warm and wonderful community. I wish I had a little more time to dedicate to blogging but teaching full time takes the majority of my life during the school year. I am happy to find bits of time to squeeze in a blog post now and then though and I so enjoy keeping up with everyone else and what's going on in their lives. Love the doggie pix as usual...so stinkin' cute!

    Hugs, Vicky

  42. Nothing does stay the same ... changes are inevitable.
But so good to have you back blogging.
I love your post today, the photographs and the thoughts you've shared.

I guess we all have to do what time allows and what we feel happy with.
Me ... I'm going to be around a good bit longer yet, and I hope you will be too.

    All the best Jan

  43. I've heard people saying Instagram is the new blogging. I hope not. I got on Instagram a while back and sort of wish I didn't. I feel stretched too thin, and would prefer to focus on blogging. I've wondered if something happened to me how my readers would know. My husband wouldn't know how to post the info on my blog. I should give him some contact info of a couple blog friends. Maybe sometimes things happen, and they are unable to communicate?
I'm glad you're back and look forward to you sharing your old-fashioned life. I really do like reading quiet, calm, home-makey and peaceful blogs. It's like having tea with a good friend. xo Deborah

  44. I'm a weirdo...I don't do instagram either but I can see the appeal. And yes, I am one of those people that you may have seen break down (a few times, well maybe more) and most people were very kind and supportive, there was one person however who took that information and used it to hurt me and my family. Sadly, they are part of our extended family and they are extremely toxic. Yep, some of the troublemakers. I have no idea if they still read my blog but I suspect they don't anymore and I blocked them on facebook so they can't have a fit whenever I compliment my husband. So I did understand why some people might make their blogs private and I too miss "friends" that have done that. I will say though that I am so glad that you are back blogging again after your much needed break. It's so good to see you happy again!

  45. I didn't know you "before" and I met you "after"....and I love your pretty blog and I do just love plain good old fashioned blogging like in the "old days"...ha ha ha LOL I enjoy pretty pictures and reading about everybody's lives and what they are up to....whether it be gardening, travelling, books, music, what's on t/v that is interesting....a little fashion...some cooking and recipes...and definetly everybody's pets! I love history and love learning about different cities and just what's going on in everybody's world. Its alot like the old fashioned days of pen-palling (which I did extensively and enjoyed so much!)--just so fun to learn about life in different parts of the country.

  46. you wrote each word so true and straight from your sensitive loving heart dear friend !
i appreciate your loyalty to your precious friends and the ways you called them back.
i hope they hear it and realize that it is not necessary to write long posts it is just sharing what is you are thinking at very present moment with simplicity and spontaneity.
    Blessings!

  47. I really enjoy your blog and am glad you are back.. Sometimes as I am writing a post, I think, "well, no one is really reading it". I may get one or two comments at the most, but when I do, it makes me smile. Mostly I write it to catalog my family and home, so I will never monetize it. Still, it feels like I am writing to the Great Beyond sometimes...the doggies are so cute. I'm a cat person but still!

  48. I feel the same, I enjoy blogs and blogging. I don't do Instagram or Facebook, or other "social media", there is only so much time in a day and I would rather spend that time creating and writing. I need to purge a few blogs off my list, as I find myself skipping their posts, knowing that the ads will annoy me and the blogger isn't trying very hard anymore to put out something worth reading. I am a recent new follower of yours, and look forward to your posts.

  49. Gosh, you really touched on some of my own feelings. I am not into the vlogging thing. I'm pretty tired of my FaceBook feed being filled with these dumb videos. And Instagram? I just don't have time for all this social media. I share on some, but I do what I can. There's not enough time for all of this! I mean, maybe if I had an assistant that could just run all my social media for me THEN there would be enough time. But that's not feasible for me. Sooooo, I stick to the old fashioned way. I like writing. I like reading other people's writing. If I wanted to watch videos, I'd watch TV or YouTube. The hubby says I'm too young to be so set in my ways, but hey, I'm stubborn :-) As for me and breaks, I have to have em'. My posts get so colorless and boring, I have to break away and regain my clarity and creativity. It's a must for me!

I'm so glad you're back! I thought of you many times over the months and hoped you were ok. I'm happy to get more pics of Bubba, I'm a selfish one :-)

    Have a great weekend Rue!

  51. Change is inevitable, and those that resist will be left behind scratching their heads wondering what the heck happened.

As for social media, it all depends on what one wishes to get out of blogging. Some people need or want to make an income, and not just a few dollars a month from typically unprofitable ads. Enter vlogging, instagram and all the other social media platforms that, yes, are a time suck but are necessary in today's fast moving online world.

As for me, I would love to have the patience, motivation, and wherewithal to utilize some of these platforms to make some moolah. Sadly, I don't, but I admire those that do. Especially those that are 'over 50'. Let's face it. We aren't exactly blazing a trail of innovation in the blogging world, so it's inspiring to see a fellow 'boomer' kick some butt. ;)

To the bloggers that commented about bloggers 'disappearing without a word', sadly, that happens all too often, and I think undermines the connections we *think* we've made online.

Blogging is an interesting phenomenon. Not that different from real life actually. You've got those whom you know AREN'T your friends, those you know ARE your friends, and those you THINK might be your friends. I suppose it's the last of those three scenarios that come to light when a blogger checks out and doesn't contact you or worse, doesn't answer emails.

It all boils down to what one's motivations are for blogging. If it's simply to share and make connections, so be it. But be aware you might need a thick skin to become immune to those bloggers whom you *think* are your friends, but through their actions, or lack thereof, leave you feeling that you were dead wrong.

  52. I think you've hit the nail on the head, Rue! Blogging has become so commercial that I've quit following many of the blogs that I used to love. Maybe it's just me, but truncated posts are one of my pet peeves. It's like knocking on a friends door and having them say "Just a minute!" and slamming the door in your face. Just sayin". Then you have to click 5 more times just to get rid of all the follow this and that to read their post, and then the many pop-up ads take away from what would be a lovely post with pretty photos. I guess it's all about the money, money, money...

I'm not on Facebook or Instagram, but I can see how the ease of Instagram would satisfy those who don't want to invest the time of creating a blog post. I'm glad I don't blog for money, because I can come and go as time allows and my creative juices flow....or not. I don't blog often and I take long breaks, so I've seen my follower number steadily drop, but I've learned to just enjoy blogging for what it is and the joy I derive from it. And once in a while when I wonder what in the world I'm doing in this little corner of the world, a stranger will leave a comment that makes my day and inspires me to keep going.

I'm glad you came back to blogging and I hope you're having fun with it, Rue!

  53. You are so right. Blogging used to seem like this wonderful small group of people who knew what was going on in everyone's life. Now it's a job. Post to twitter, post to Facebook, pin so many pins, snapchat, Instagram. It's just never ending. I found that I was not stopping by to visit the blogs that I truly wanted to visit (like yours) and was too busy doing all the other stuff. I've finally decided that there needs to be a balance.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm so with you about IG... I too have noticed that less and less visitors come by my blog because I am constantly posting on IG and I guess that's enough for some. I still keep blogging because I love documenting my everyday life for my own purpose of later remembering what I did, and where I was on a certain day and year. It's like a personal journal that I write just for me, not expecting others to come by... and most probably they don't, because I don't see that many comments haha... ;)

I really don't like IG, and more than once have been tempted to delete my account, but everyone else is doing it, so I have kept mine.... anyway, I'm with you, and prefer to read a blog than just seeing a pic on IG... ;)

I love your living room and your style...

    Good to see you again

  55. Hi, Rue!

Thanks so much for sending an email and checking up on me...that was so sweet of you! I really haven't fallen off the face of the earth, although sometimes I feel like I am living in a whole new world! Ha!

Things are going well in my "new" life, and I am LOVING that I get to see my kids more often. My new teaching job keeps me incredibly busy and exhausted! Every once in a great while when I get a spare moment (and I'm still awake!), I check on how my blogging friends are doing. I'm so glad to see you are up and at it again! :)

I never really planned on NOT blogging anymore, it just kind of happened. First, I was too busy with the move, the new job, seeing my kids, etc. Then I noticed that one of my "stalkers" from back home had somehow stumbled onto my blog and I felt so...violated. Forget that I openly shared my life with the WORLD via the internet, I just didn't want to invite this particular group of people into my new home. After all, they were part of the reason I moved! LOL So, I just shut down the little ole blog until I have more time to think about it. Do I want to say, "Who cares?" and open up my blog again, or do I want to maybe start a new one? I have to do some thinking on that...

In the meantime, I am living what I refer to as my "Walden" year. My son and I share a very simple apartment and way of life--it is WONDERFUL and so freeing! Unless people are really into minimalism, I'm not sure anyone would want to read what I would have to blog about! :)

Well, I didn't set out to write a whole book here, but I thought I'd let everyone know I'm alive and well. Thanks again, my friend, for checking on me, and I am excited to have more time this summer to catch up with all of you delightful ladies!

P.S. Rue, you look happy...and that makes me very happy! :)

  56. Hello Rue. I am in New Zealand and have only just found your blog. Am so pleased. I will go back and read all I have missed. We are heading into winter here and nothing but floods and earthquakes here and such awful news from overseas it is a joy to look at beautiful photos and to hear the stories. I use my iPad live in the country have a hub and sweet cat but it can get lonely as I live in an old church ( 35 years) love it to bits but it can get lonely with no neighbours and not a farm of our own.just as well at our age. But a lovely garden. I don't blog as apart from not knowing how I jus garden read and enjoy movies. Don't go into town hardly ever as I can buy what I want on the net and just love Amazon. Bought some out of print books that I love - for just one cent recently -just cost me postage - what a good score. Are people getting rid of books or just doing kindle ? That is sad. Nothing like reading a good book. Look forward to your future blogs. Best wishes X.

    1. Hi Sally :)

I'm sorry you're experiencing such awful things there in New Zealand and I hope things improve soon.

I'm so glad you have your garden and books to enjoy and so happy that you left me a comment. I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. I would have emailed you, but you're a no-reply blogger.

Thank you very much for your kind words :)

  57. A wonderful post Rue, I was agreeing with you all the way through! No IM for me! I love the relationships found in blogging, and that is why I blog. It is more like virtual penpals for me, and it has brought such beautiful people in my life.. social media doesn't do this! Vlogging? I had never heard of it, but how awful, who has time to sit and listen to someone talk? I don't. I read blogs when I have time, and don't want to watch something. Anyway, I'm happy to have met you, and agree that the relationships made through blogging are wonderful. Hugs to you today... sure do love the pictures of your dogs :)

  58. Oh I love how you transferred certain things to the pups. Ha! Made me laugh aloud. Well, I echo your comments even as I am slowing down myself. Perhaps it is the ten-year itch and the losses and life and general malaise. Still, I am most hopeful for the future and I know how the story ends.

  59. I am more of a photo person and a reader. In fact, I can't pay attention at all to video or t.v. so I won't visit those types of blogs... I was going to join some project update, but decided it wasn't worth the effort, because I did it last year, and it didn't gain readers, and I don't care what popular blogs are doing for their spring makeover or whatever, because they are over exposed. I guess it's sort of like reading "People"; I don't. I really enjoy visiting the people who visit my blog. I find it much more interesting and personal. Even though I don't have as much time these days, I do try to catch up about every week or so. xoxo Su

  60. This post, such a joy! A blogger who is not afraid to say thoughts, which she is thinking! Mmmm, I do love "thoughts", in blogging.

Seem they are rather few and far between.

Seems most bloggers just don't want, to maybe "rock the boat." And so, keep their ponderings, wonderings, opinions, to themselves.

Thank you, for being, who you are!

    Gentle Spring-time blessings,

  61. I do IG, in a very tiny way. And sporadically. The people I have found there, do not blog.

Have no interest in vlogging, or in watching it.

I too, am OC, and do re-read my posts, and even comments I leave on other blogs, but have tried to curtail its influence on my blogging itself. Just me!!!

I agree with you, on not spending much time, reading blogs, which never comment back. So happy to read someone else, who says this! After all, blogging is a give-and-take thing... Chatting-over-the-back-fence sort of thing... In such, reciprocation is needed. Is to be expected, in my way of thinking.

Last but not least, lovely to see the lady, behind the blog!!!

    Gentle Spring-time blessings,

  62. Rue, this post is one I cannot NOT comment on! When I started blogging in February 2010 I hadn't even read many blogs, was not very tech savvy and was just going to have to figure it all out as I went along. I had noticed there were bloggers posting daily or at least several times a week. I thought to myself, I don't really know how long a blog post is going to take, but I know I'm not going to be able to do that; decided from the outset that once a week was going to be it, and that has worked out well.

I've never really figured out why a blogger would want to also do Facebook and/or Instagram and so have never signed up for those. I am on Twitter and Pinterest, but my main focus is the blog. And there are other social media things, such as Snapchat, I know nothing about. Some bloggers are on *every*thing! When do they sleep?!

Pop-ups? I hate them. I understand why some bloggers have them, but I don't want them. I'd rather forego ad income. They're not always as bad as some blogs I see where the pop-ups are constant, extremely intrusive, including ones that immediately ask you to subscribe to the blog before you've even had a chance to read the first sentence!

I do have some affiliate links on some of my posts so that my readers can easily get a particular piece of kitchen equipment they might need for that recipe. But you don't have to click on it if you don't want to. But I don't like to leave my readers hanging, thinking "Well, nice recipe, but what in the world are crumpet rings (or whatever) and where am I supposed to get them?!"

It's been suggested I include some videos on my blog, showing readers exactly how something is done. So far, I've preferred a series of photos in my "tutorial" posts, such as How to Make Pastry. I may one day pop in a video here and there, but I will never become a vlogger. I don't even visit vlogs, just blogs. And I love to connect with my readers through giving and receiving comments.

Love your blog and glad you're back! (I'm one who kept coming back, looking for your return to the blogosphere.)

  63. For me, blogging is about the friendships, and the interactions with other ladies who are willing to share their lives with me, for the love, concern, prayers, thoughts, ideas, inspiration.. so many things that blogging has brought into my life. Vlogs - ick! I don't have great internet, and if I can't quickly read what you have to say, I sure don't want to sit and listen, I don't have time for that. Maybe a quick tutorial once in a while, but as an ongoing thing, no thanks. Thanks for opening up and sharing your thoughts in a truly gracious way about the joys of blogging. I'm glad you are back!

  64. Wow, Rue, this was an interesting post. We are both from the same early era of blogging and I know what you mean about how things have changed. There are now hundreds of thousands of bloggers (maybe millions of bloggers?) all around the world. It's a good thing and a bad thing as people come and go all the time. Blogs have become so professional, too, with all the bells and whistles. But that's progress I guess. It is sad when people disappear "poof" after so many years of blogging. I always wonder when that happens as to the "whys" I've also see a few favorite bloggers pass away, and that reminds me each and every day is a gift. I blog once a week these days as I'm pretty busy with grandkids--it is why we moved west after all. I'm in love with life here in Colorado and I love showing it on my blog just as I did when I loved living in my hometown of Brooklyn on my blog. I don't craft or decorate or do dishes or fancy food so it's all I got...lol No chance of me ever vlogging-as I have a verifiable Brooklyn accent and half the country wouldn't understand me..lol I get kidded for that here all the time. I do have an IG and I like it. I also have facebook and I love pinterest, but I don't think I'll ever give up on my blog. I look at it as my journal and as mental exercise. It is hopefully keeping me young!

  65. I followed your previous blog and I am so incredibly happy to see that you are back! Your blog is one of the few that I look forward to reading - you always have something that makes me smile. I'm happier after reading and looking at your beautiful photos and words! Thanks for being you!

  66. totally agree with your opinion. I had several blogs I could start the day with and learn things from and now if we are lucky they blog three times a month. I did not come up with the idea of blogs, I did not recruit these bloggers, I just miss them when they are gone. I was learning so much, and as we may know, in class you don't have to raise your hand and comment all the time. Just sometimes. Sorry you felt ignored, but you probably weren't at all.

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
