As I've said before, aside from Christmas time, I'm not much of a seasonal decorator.
I'll bring out a few throws, a couple of pretty scented candles, and place a pumpkin here or there... and that's about the extent for Autumn.
Some old Halloween knick-knacks will make their appearance around October 1st.
Mostly at my daughter's urging ;)
But that's pretty much it.
It's not because I don't like Autumn.
Oh no! Quite the contrary.
As I've gotten older, I love it even more than any other Season.
It's just that when I look around my home, I realize that I don't really need to add "things" to know it's that time of year.
I already know.
I just have to pay attention to the changes outside...
And the way the light moves around on the inside...
I really don't even need to pay attention to the calendar.
I just know :)

I love ya sister! I love fall, and for the most part, it's that hazy atmosphere, and the bright colors and crunch and woodsmoke...outside. Yes!
ReplyDeleteBlogging brought about a challenge to do do do seasons and holidays. No more. I do post about my here and there autumn decor...mostly my mantel which screams for attention, and my dining table.
Do whet you love and love what you do. Otherwise move on!!
Great post, as always. LOVE your cozy home!

I love fall too. Would love it more if we had a real change of seasons down here. But, the heat and humidity are less, the sun is at a different angle and hurricane season is almost over.
ReplyDeleteHappy Autumn there in your oh so lovely home ~ FlowerLady
I love this time of the year. I only decorate for Fall and Christmas. Kids are grown up and not many people visit, so just me and Hubby.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful pictures of your home. So cozy!
ReplyDeleteFall is my favorite, too. Here in Illinois there is a chill in the air, just perfect for October.
Thanks for posting.

Your home is lovely:)
ReplyDeleteI love the way the sunlight bounces through your home. I don't decorate for Halloween. But I usually decorate for fall, with mums, pumpkins, plaid throws etc.
ReplyDeleteI just love this Rue. It's so true ~ just look around and feel how crisp the wind is etc. Your home is lovely.
ReplyDeleteYou nailed it.
ReplyDeleteHugs.
I wish the sun came through the windows at our place like it does at yours. Our home is shaded on the backside by the mountain, and the front southern exposure has a large veranda that overhangs the windows. Your pictures are so artistic. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteWe really don't get seasonal changes much. The way I know is the sand on the beach. It erodes in the winter and that process begins slowly in the fall.
ReplyDeleteI adore your sweet home! I'm getting the same way. I look more to the outside these days.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Love your home and the photos are so pretty. It takes so long to get the Fall colors here so I do add a few to the inside! The light is my favorite change oh and of course the cooler temps!
ReplyDeleteRight there with you...a few pumpkins (mostly fake these days), my electric candles and a cozy throw is all it takes. The way the light hits that beautiful room of yours is just magical. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you Rue...don't need much to tell me the seasons are changing! Your home looks lovely in the sunlight. There's something about the angle of the sun...I'm convinced my home looks loveliest in the fall! Enjoy your evening! ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. I love the filtered light this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI am right there with you Rue. I love autumn too but put very little decor out. I do some fall on the outside and a pumpkin here and there in the house. I like the simplicity of having open windows that let the changing light of the season in all day long. I can see out to all the pretty trees beginning to change color. I love that Mother Nature does such a great job outside the windows with fall decor. No need to compete with that. Have a great rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kris
Your home is just gorgeous! I love that flagstone, too. You really have a talent for decorating and photography.
ReplyDeleteI just love your cute little cottage. Enjoy the fall!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have light move around the house, Rue. I bet you can tell what time it is by the light, too. Your house is special, it has a wonderful vibe, even through photographs.~Ginene
ReplyDeleteYour place is so pretty, all decked out in autumn light. I pulled out a few things here and there for Fall/Halloween, but I wasn't really feeling it. Its so hot here still...once we get into November I am all in!
ReplyDeleteIt's so obvious how happy your sweet cozy home makes you, Rue - you and I are such kindred spirits! I am so moved by the light in my home, I am often driven to grab my camera and try to capture it...but it never quite translates as well as I'd like it to! Gorgeous photos, my friend. It seems you also have a mountain view from your home - awesome!!
ReplyDeleteThe smell of wood burning, early nights and seeing foliage change up in the mountains, how wonderful:). The sun moving and the light softer. It's been a very warm October, but as my husband said, it's not over a 100 and it's a dry heat. Enjoy your lovely home,

Your photos are dreamy, Rue. I tend to hibernate in winter, so I am having fun outdoors while I can.
ReplyDeleteI hear you, Rue. It is the movement of light and sun that is the most striking to me in the Fall. I need to get your blog back on my reading list. It has dropped off somehow. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteYour photos are always so beautiful, Rue. I used to decorate the house - more for Halloween than for Autumn - when my girls were young and lived at home. But that went by the wayside long ago! And like you, I don't need any special decorations to tell me autumn has arrived. The fact that sundown is at 6PM tells me all I need to know!
ReplyDeleteYour exterior of your house is so inviting.
ReplyDeleteI love your photos showing how the sun dances around your home in fall...how pretty! Sorry I've not been around most of the summer...I'm back visiting a bit now...and hope to post some of the stuff I've been so busy doing. Also, I have a new Blog...Living My Kaleidoscope Life!!
ReplyDeleteJan Tanis
I love this time of year, and I love all of your photographs.
ReplyDeleteThe way the light and shadows work in your photo's are just lovely.
All the best Jan
Morning Rue ~ I enjoy my fall and Halloween stuff I put out but then the other day I stopped and thought....whose see it besides me? As I get older putting it out and cleaning around it becomes something I can't find the energy to do!! haha....age, it sucks! Loving the lights around the inside of the house. I love fall....best time of the yr.
ReplyDeleteLovely post, Rue. I, too, do very little seasonal decorating. Just a few pieces I place here and there. I take great joy in looking out our windows at all the glorious colors outside in our gardens and beyond, and agree enthusiastically with your thoughts on the light. Oh, the light of fall -- so soft peaceful. I'm more excited about cooking homemade soup and stews now than decorating. LOL Hugs, sweet friend. ~ Nancy
ReplyDeleteAutumn is my favorite as well. I always like to add more details like throws and pillows to make the house more cozy for winter and put things away in the summer for a cleaner, calmer look. The rest is done by the quality of the light that comes through the windows and changes the look of a room from one season to the next.

I decorate for fall and Christmas only. I put out pumpkins as children love them :) and that's important to me.
ReplyDeletePretty photos. The living room one is my favorite as it seems a lovely spot to sit.
Your photos are lovely. I love your home, Rue.

i am the same way...very little seasonal decorating....your home is so pretty
ReplyDeleteI know, I love watching the way the light changes in the house with the seasons. Autumn light is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHi Rue! Oh, the sunlight streaming through your sweet home is lovely! I think Fall is my favorite time of year. Hope you're doing well.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Autumn could be my favorite if I did't know that winter is following. In IL it can be brutal. So as much as I love it I know what follows. I enjoyed how the light danced across your home..
ReplyDeleteLove all the photos, Rue, I must say fall has always been my favorite season, with Christmas being my favorite holiday. Your one is always so warm and inviting.
ReplyDeleteSue
Fall is my favorite season too. It used to be Winter when I first moved back to the "mainland" for college many many years ago, then it was Spring, but I find as I got older, Fall became my favorite. Maybe it is because it signals the slowing down after the hectic (and hot) days of Summer. I love nothing more than to snuggle under a cozy throw with a cat peacefully napping in my lap as I watch a favorite movie. Pure bliss!
ReplyDeleteYou have such a beautiful home. I love the light this time of year, such a welcome relief from the blazing summers. I love how everything looks gray inside my home. It just feels cozy, and I see that kind of warmth in the colors of your home as well. xoxo Su
ReplyDeleteLast year I gave about 3/4 of my fall decor to my DIL / THIS year I have yet to drag any of what I have left out, because we kept having warm temps / very little change outdoors. Indoors should reflect outdoors in my view :)
ReplyDeleteI am with you... knowing and enjoying it is enough! I did bring some fall flowers, and pumpkins from my garden into the house, but yes, the darker evenings, later mornings, warmer light, definitely highlights the changing of the season, not to mention all the glorious colors of fall everywhere! I enjoyed your thoughts shared today, knowing is enough :)
ReplyDeleteRue, I love your home! And autumn. And the way you've captured the autumn light all around your home. So inviting.
ReplyDeleteI always love the photos in and around your house. i, too, spend more time appreciating the outside spectacular drama going on in fall than decorating inside although i do put just a few of my favorite items out.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a pretty home, Rue. I love the photo of your living room with the light streaming in. I love autumn, too, and the fall decor outside is so much prettier than anything I could manage to do inside. Have a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteLove the way the light streams into your living room. Autumn is my favorite time of year and growing up we just got a pumpkin a few days before Halloween to carve and put a candle in. It was exciting time for us growing up. It's so much more stuff being put out today and really it's like you say, the real splendour of the season is right outside our door. I put out pumpkins this year and wreath for the kids to enjoy, but not much inside., a few things on the dining room table for color. I do love gourds from the garden to sit around. Loved your post.

Hi Rue, I love the lovely, golden light in your rooms. Your house looks so cozy! I usually love to decorate for fall, especially Halloween, but just haven’t had the time to do it this year. Hope all is well.
ReplyDeleteXoxo, Melissa
Been missing visits to your Old Fashion World.....
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful. We took a ride up north every week, up until a couple of weeks ago. We wanted to see the leaves change in Flagstaff and Prescott's later. I sure hope they are wrong about the temperature for Thanksgiving! I remember one year when I was young, that my brother went swimming on Christmas and it was not a heated pool then. I am afraid we are having one of those autumns down here. :(
ReplyDeletehi Rue,
ReplyDeleteYou do have such lovely light in your rooms....our house just doesn't get great light....I also don't do a huge amount of seasonal decoration for fall. Most decorating happens in my dining room using seasonal dishes and linens and then some in the living room. The older I get, the less clutter I tolerate....your home always looks comfy and cozy....take care.
such a welcoming home you own, rue.
