Yet another un-remuddling

The "brown paint lovers" that used to own this house also liked painting tile and apparently the sides of bathtubs.

The other day I decided to take care of the bathtub in the main upstairs bathroom, which also serves as the powder room.

This is after I already started scraping the paint off:

Thank goodness I remembered to take this picture or you wouldn't have seen the ridiculousness.

This is what it looked like after:

I was seriously worried that in the middle of scrapping the paint off that there was something really wrong with the tub.

Obviously there wasn't.

These people need their head examined for covering up a perfectly good vintage tub.

Seriously.

Anyway, it looks soooooo much better now.

I thought I'd show you the rest of the bathroom while we're in here.

Before I show it to you, let me just say that the lighting is horrible and it's small so the pictures won't be that great.

Also, the idiots drywalled over the lath and plaster instead of taking off the original wallpaper. I hope to take it off one day and am hoping the wallpaper is still intact, because it's really cute. I found a sample when I took off the plug cover on the wall, because I'm nosey like that ;)

The other thing that irritates me is that the base of the sink that matches the tub is out in the yard, where they used it as a planter. God knows what happened to the sink portion. Ugh.

Anywho...

Here's the view when you walk in:

Original tile, towel rack and soap dishes.

The potty.

The sink area:

And well that's it.

The walls when I moved in were painted a gross green color, so I painted it white with yellow trim. I'm not sure if the yellow will stay, but it's definitely a lot better than the green.

Hopefully one day I'll find that matching sink and maybe even the matching potty.

Wish me luck, because I think I'll need it ;)

  2. I can't believe they painted the tub!!! Yikes! I thought painting the tiles was odd, but the tub, too? Cute bathroom. I bet you could find toilet and sink to match. Maybe not in your yard...but online. I'll look! Glad the paint came off so easily and the tub was unscathed. Happy soaking! ;)

  4. Wow! Persevere is calling your name. Good for you! Love the nooks and crannies in the bathroom. But my! The toilet looks a bit of a challenge to maneuver. I would love to see the wallpaper too. Older homes have a lot of character. Kathleen in Az

    1. Hi Kathleen :)

The toilet area isn't too bad, but it looks really small in that picture. I think it'll be better if I take down the drywall, but I'm not quite ready for that project lol

  5. Wow, it's great that you could remove that paint Rue. I'm sure it looks so much better without the brown (what were they thinking?). I have a really small bathroom too so I know how hard it is to take pics.

  7. Just before we bought our house, the sellers took out the pedastal sink and put in a very tiny vanity! Ugh! And then they carpeted over the hex tile! It was not "updated" but horrible! Thank heaven they left the original tub! What do people think! Yours looks pretty and period -- You did a great job!

  8. Goodness gracious! The hubby and I lived in a rental when we first moved to Kentucky where the owners had painted everything in the bathroom. The tub, the tile, the sink, the cabinets. It was the most hideous bathroom I've ever seen. I seriously question some people's sanity when it comes to decorating. Anyhoo, I love the tub. It looks way better :)

  9. If only more people who buy an old house would look at it in terms of restoration instead of renovation, what charm and character would be revealed. I applaud you, Rue! I picture your house losing its embarrassment over what has been done to it over the decades and now standing up straight with pride as you labor to restore it to what was appropriate for it.

I do think back to the pedestal sinks of my childhood and after going to friends new houses, remember going home and begging Mama and Daddy to put in vanities in ours so we wouldn't look so old-fashioned. They didn't, thank goodness.

Have a good weekend Rue, in your happy house,
    Dewena

  11. Beautiful! Reminds me of my son's bathroom in the home he purchased last year. His is very vintage with green tile. What a huge job that must have been getting the paint off.

  12. What a job removing that paint must have been, but how wonderful to get to the end and there was NOTHING wrong with the tub. I like it.

I love your little built-in cupboard and the mirror in nitch over sink is beautiful.

    Nicely remodeled bathroom.

Have a great weekend ~ FlowerLady

  14. In our previous house we had a bright orange bathroom suite, I haven't thought about that for ages, but your post reminded me. I wonder what the new owners did with it. Shame that you don't have the full suite, but at least the toilet and basin match each other so the bath becomes the feature, that is good isn't it. xx

  17. Your loving restoration is a joy to watch. I hope you find the other part of the sink. When I renovated the old 4-Square, I found the original pedestal sinks--and a gorgeous window--in the garage. I replaced a "modern" vanity with the pedestal (it still had a chain and stopper!). It was a Turn of the Century home like your previous one--a twin!--and the new owners' designer decorated it with Tuscan art, brand new Italian furniture. I am pretty sure the sink was replaced with a granite-topped counter.

  18. My goodness, I admire your patience. I do love the eccentricities of previous people that lived in the homes before. With the house I am in now we were first so no doubt there are some things that we have decorated and the next people will laugh at. You have worked so hard on this and it looks great xx

  22. Okay...I am confused...was the tub white when you moved in? Now, the paint is off and it's brown? Your opening comment is, "the brown paint lovers....." if you feel they loved the brown why would they paint it white. Even commenter,
"Chatfield Court" commented, "it looks so much better w/o the brown." .... but the after? pics show a brown tub. I am confused!!!! Either way it was daring to take the paint off...ya never know what you'll find under there. The potty looks close and cozy!!! Older homes are full of surprises.../addie

    1. I'm confused, too!

Either way...I think your bathroom is very charming. Love the recessed part of the wall where that beautiful mirror over the sink is. And the sconces are really cool, too.

    2. Hi Addie and Melanie :)

I call them the brown paint lovers, because every single wall in the main rooms, the kitchen cupboards, and the outside walls and trim were painted brown. For some off reason they painted the side of the bathtub white and the tile in the downstairs bathroom green. I should have been more clear for people that may not have read my posts about the brown paint.

  23. Im sitting here wondering how in the world one removes paint from a bathtub!? However it's done, it must be a ton of work. I commend you for appreciating and respecting the history of your sweet house Rue. I'm sure it's very happy to have you living there.

  26. Ru, I'm so impressed with all the work you do around your home. This looks like a tedious project, but you managed to finish it all. I really like the shape of the sink, and I think the yellow and white colors are charming.

Thank you for the birthday wishes, friend. It meant a lot to me. :~)

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
