A day in my life

It's 6am when my alarm goes off.

I wipe the sleep out of my eyes and stretch a little.

Reaching for my phone, I see my good morning text from John and I wish him a good morning too.

Then it's time to open the gate to let Mini and Bubba downstairs to go outside and maybe snuggle a bit.

As I head upstairs, I'm reminded that I need to finish up my hallway project.

When I get to the top, the sun is rising.

Soon, it'll rise before I even think about waking up and I'll miss it.

 I contemplate this as...

 I feed the pups,

brush my teeth,

and start up the percolator.

While it heats up, I watch and listen to the birds happily chirping away outside at the bird feeder.

Within minutes my first cup of coffee is ready.

I take it over to sit down in my little breakfast nook and notice the sunlight changing in my kitchen.

Afterwards,

I hop in the shower,

get dressed,

and it's time to call my mom for our morning chat.

We hang up eventually and by this time the sun is shining brightly.

It's time get on with my day.

I might snap a few pictures around the house...

turn on the news,

check my email,

visit some blogs,

and maybe post something myself.

Then it's time to eat my breakfast...

and wash the dishes.

After that,

I run downstairs to put on my makeup,

make my bed,

and throw some laundry in the washer.

Then it's back upstairs to check my list of chores to see what else needs to be done.

As I get to work, Bubba and Mini do their jobs of barking and sleeping ;)

Around 11:30 or so, I eat my lunch...

and then get back to my chores.

This time of year, I like to go for an evening walk in my neighborhood with Bubba.

Poor mini has to stay home these days, because she's too old now.

She doesn't seem to mind though.

I think she enjoys the peace and quiet of not having to listen to Bubba bark at everything ;)

Anyway....

Before I know it, it's time to start making dinner.

There might even be a cocktail poured ;)

And as always, my ever faithful companion is staring at directing me.

I clean up the dishes and then I settle in with Bubba to read a book or watch a movie.

Sometime around 10:30 or 11pm, it's time for bed.

I pour myself a glass of water, brush my teeth, kiss the pups goodnight, turn off all the lights, go downstairs, set my alarm, get cozy under the blankets and fall fast asleep.

It's not always the same though.

The next day might involve...

going to the grocery or hardware store,

visiting with one of my friends,

or with my family down south.

Annie, my very busy daughter, could actually be home for once ;)

Alex, my son, could be coming home for a visit.

Sadly, it might end up being a day filled with tragedy.

Although, I certainly hope not.

But perhaps, it's just a regular day, like this one.

There's one thing that never changes though.

I'm always grateful to wake up in the morning and go to bed, alive and loved.

Isn't that all that really, truly matters?

I think so :)

  1. Thank you for this wonderful narrative. Reminds me of something the Bronte sisters would write {even though all three had different writing styles}. And your prose is descriptive none the less. Even if you didn't include the photos, I would still be able to picture your day from your words.

  2. Why on Earth would you get up as six if you don't have to go to work?????

  3. What a great post. A lot of the things you do, I also do each morning. Except that I don't set an alarm. I get up when I wake up, but get busy with my chores.

Have a great week. Darling dogs - aren't they great.

  4. Sounds like a good life to me. I have to laugh at Sue's comment though. I'm retired and I usually am up and about by 5:30, sometimes 5:00. But we're early to bed, early to rise people. I do have one question for you, though, Rue. Looking at your list I'm just wondering if you do all that in a dress, high heels and an apron. (Couldn't resist.) Hugs, Nancy

  5. Sounds like a perfect day except for that 6:00 alarm! I never set my alarm unless I have to leave the house early for some reason. I hate waking up to an alarm!

  6. Hi Rue, The perfect day in the life!! Love this post!! I find there is so much to be grateful and thankful for in the little everyday chores we sometime take for granted in the course of a day. We all have our routines and I wake up early to begin my day and do many of the same as you describe, except, no alarm and I add painting to my day! I don't have my sweet Miss Beazy to walk anymore but I still get out there while the weather is still cooler.
Wishing you a great week. Hugs to you and your pups!

  7. Rue, you certainly have a beautiful view to greet you in the morning. I'm so grateful for my days as well. They can be ordinary or full of adventure, either way, I'm a happy girl. So glad to have found your blog. I like the way you write and the images that follow along. Like little paintings!

  9. I loved this little glimpse into your day! I can't believe you get up so early though - and with an alarm! Are you a morning person? I normally awake around 7 or shortly thereafter. If I have to be somewhere - an appointment or meeting someone - then I set an alarm just in case I accidentally oversleep.

  10. A beautiful sunrise in the mountains and a breath of fresh air to boot. We all have our morning rituals and making sure my dogs go out is number one :).

  14. That's a lovely synopsis of an ordinary day, which really is quite an extraordinary one after all. I liked seeing your lunch. It looked a lot like my supper minus the grapes and the cheese. ☺️. Very pretty parting photo of your charming home.

  20. I'm always grateful in the morning too. Every time I wake up in my cozy little house, I think about the time period before we moved in. That terrible rental house, being shuffled from house to house by the hubby's family... I'm just so thankful to wake up in my own little space that I treasure.

I loved all the pictures, especially of Bubba. I too have a chihuahua who directs me in the kitchen, I don't see how people live without dogs! :-)

    Have a great day Rue!

  24. A day in the life ...

We find that the routine of our life these days is not having a routine. We wake up each morning and say, "what should we do today?" The one given is that it will involve the beach and Lulu. It's 9:43 and we still haven't decide what today's adventure will be.

  28. Lovely photos Rue! Your days sound lovely. Reminds me of my days in the summer when I am off work for a couple months. I love not having to get up and rush to get ready to go and rush out the door every morning. So nice! I look forward to retirement...hopefully an early one. :) Have a lovely Friday and weekend.

  29. I really love the way the sunlight hits those three small images in your kitchen and the old coffee pot. It's so beautiful. I love your living room and your house is just so adorable. It is good to have routines or even it is not a routine to take note once in awhile and appreciate it for what it is. Lovely post. Last night at around 8:00 we were up in Anthem with my sister, and we decided to take the girls up to Sunset Point and look at the stars with the telescope. It was really fun, but I was surprised by the cooler evening temp compared to the valley. xoxo Su

  47. Lovely post, Rue. I especially like the photos of sunrise and the light changing in the kitchen. I wake up super early, no need for an alarm clock, so get to see a lot of sunrises. A lot of people don't, and so they don't know that they're really even better than sunsets!

  48. thanks for sharing a day in your life - it was a beautiful intimate look inside another's home which I appreciated. How can one NOT LOVe that morning light in the kitchen - awesome - and peeks inside your house and knowing that in someone elses' world in those moments life was just perfect for them and it all started with an appreciation of the sunrise.

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
