A childhood wish

When I was a little girl, all I wanted was a miniature dollhouse.

Not one of those plastic kid toys, but a real dollhouse... the kind with actual replicas of furniture, linens, food, and lights that worked.

For years, it was all I dreamt about.

In fact, there was a restaurant that we went to all the time, with a miniatures shop next door and I'd always ask to go inside so I could look at all the wonderful items they had for sale, dreaming of the day when I could finally furnish one of my own.

One Christmas, much to my chagrin, my best friend, Stephanie woke up to find a dollhouse under her Christmas tree.

It looked much like this:

You could open the sides or the roof to see inside and it was completely furnished with little twinkling lights throughout.

I was so green with envy!

I went home and told my mom all about it and I'm sure, drove her insane, but when I asked her if I could have one, she just told me no.

Something about me breaking it.

I was one sad little girl.

I still asked Santa for one of those lighted dollhouses every Christmas, but my wish never came true.

Funny thing... when I look back, I don't remember Stephanie ever playing with it.

It just sat in her room untouched.

Sad, isn't it?

Eventually, I got older and put aside my dream of owning one of those beautiful creations.

But it remained somewhere in the back of my mind.

Then one day I was told about the miniatures museum in Tucson, called the The Mini Time Machine.

I was so excited!

Eventually I got the chance to go :)

This is the first house you see...

The next one had an automated door that opened when you walked up to it.

I was in heaven!

So much so that I forgot to take pictures at first, until I found a replica of the Gamble House by Greene and Greene.

My pictures are awful, because I was using my cell phone, but it was truly a work of art.

And there were so many more beautiful homes...

Even Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett were there ;)

And there was even miniatures in the floor...

Like I said, I was too busy gawking to take many pictures, but you can read more 'here'

and watch this video:

It was so much fun and it brought back all those childhood dreams that I had laid to rest.

By the way, what's the one thing you always wanted for Christmas?

Maybe it's time for your childhood wish to come true :)

  1. For my daughter's 6th birthday, I built her a dollhouse. I had no idea how much work it would be, but it was fun to sneak out to our work shed (at our previous house) each night once KC was in bed and work on the dollhouse. For her birthday party, I wrote on the invitation that I had made her a dollhouse so everyone went to the local miniature shop and bought her furniture.

Now the house sits in our attic waiting for a granddaughter (she expecting a boy in 1 month). And, I confess that I glued the wood siding on upside down!

  6. I just KNEW your wonderful man, was going to get you one!!!!!!

Oh mercy, is he ever a keeper!!

So sad, that you never got one, in childhood.

I remember wanting a Bride Doll. And my mother made the bridal outfit, for one, for one Christmas. Of course, I didn't 'know' she had make it then. I was just thrilled and loved that doll, to-pieces.

My husband built a dollhouse for our daughter. Not fancy, but open, so she could play with it.

So happy for you. For the coming doll house. But more, for the wonderful man in your life.

    Many, many gentle hugs,

  7. That is just the sweetest story. He is a gem!! I had one of those houses, my dad built it for me before he passed away. It was huge, it was white stucco with brown trim. I had the electrifying kit, wallpaper, rugs and the most gorgeous pieces of furniture. His illness interrupted the progress, so I never finished it. Now it's half broken in my basement, and my husband sighs heavily when I tell him I can't toss it, because I keep vowing to repair it...someday!! It's a fun hobby and you will love it. Enjoy your dollhouse, Rue!!

  9. Awww...super sweet! How wonderful is that??!! I remember wanting one of those too,but my parents were fairly poor so I got one of the metal ones. I really loved it! I loved playing with all things 'domestic" but my favorite childhood gift was a green Schwinn bike with a sparkly matching banana seat. I rode all over my little patch of Lubbock on it!!

  10. Oh my gosh, this made me tear up. John is so sweet, attentive and thoughtful! I'm so happy for you! I too have always wanted a doll house and never had one as a child. I found an amazing 1940s Keystone dollhouse at an old lady's garage sale last year. She said it was hers as a child. It even had some furniture with it! I have a pinterest page full of wonderful ideas on how to decorate it, and would love to make it pristine with wallpaper and decorated in the 1940s, but on the other hand, I also want my grandchildren to be able to play with it. I have decided for now I am getting chunky fun unbreakable furniture so they can play and someday I'll decorate like a mini dream house! There are so many different styles of furniture out there, I will be anxious to see what time period/style you choose. I'm thinking you'll probably chose 1930s!

  11. How sweet!
I grew up going to to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. There was this room of dioramas that was always my favorite to stare and wonder about the all the little details. It was a cozy and dark wood paneled room with the dioramas placed into the wall and illuminated.

  12. I built one from a kit for our daughter many, many years ago and she never played with it. I think it was really more for me. I no longer have it and can't even remember if I sold it or not. I'm sure you'll love it when he gets it put together and what a sweet man you have!

  13. What a sweet and thoughtful man you have in John! BG and I built a nice big (and plain) Barbie doll house years ago for our daughter for Christmas. I used contact paper for wallpaper and pieces of leftover carpet for the flooring. Then I took some foam pieces and covered them with fabric and made a bed, sofa and chair. She loved it!

As for me, our local five and dime was giving away a beautiful bride doll at Christmas one year. I wanted that doll sooo bad. We went to the drawing only to see my neighbor win the doll. I was so disappointed. I asked for a bride doll of my own every year until I outgrew dolls. I never got one. I'm sure my mother knew that the beautiful gown wouldn't last long in my hands! :)

  15. Oh my gosh Rue.....he is a total keeper! Amazing, its it wonderful to know that you are so important to someone like that? I love it. During one Christmas I also wanted a doll house, but that was one Christmas only and later in life I settled for a Printers Tray with mini stuff in it! haha...A bride doll but realized that would be one of those things that would just sit there to look at. So I went with Barbies that I could play with and enjoy! Merry early Christmas Rue!

  16. Oh Rue! What a great guy he is! I've always loved doll houses too. I had one as a child and so did my girls. Cannot wait to see yours and how you decorate it. Should be a quick fix since it's already planned out in your head!! ;) Enjoy!

  18. What a beautiful story! Even more special that he's actually building you one. Wow, that's some talent! I had a couple of dollhouses as a child and I loved them. Played with them all the time. Nothing fancy at all - just those tin ones. I still have a container of the dollhouse furniture (plastic, from the late 60's - early 70's). But I have no desire for a dollhouse now. If I ever have a granddaughter, I would get her a dollhouse to keep here and we could use the retro furniture!

  19. What a truly romantic thing for him to do, keeper for sure. I have some dollhouse furniture made into Christmas ornaments for the tree - nice to visit them each holiday season.

  20. I'm very happy for you that a special someone really listened and knew how much a dollhouse still will mean to you. I was fortunate to have parents who were very good Christmas gift givers so I can't recall something I longed for but never got. My sister and I had something that was like a dollhouse -- a clothing boutique for Barbie. It was a cardboard structure that opened up and was lined with racks and shelves to display clothing and accessories so that our Barbies could shop. When we got tired of store keeping we pretended the structure was Barbie's house and made furniture out of things around the house such as Kleenex boxes and construction paper. So it was very much like a dollhouse. I really never had the desire for a true old-fashioned dollhouse, but this past Christmas my mom gave me her ceramic Christmas village buildings with little people and other accessories. I didn't think I'd give a hoot about it, but I had so much fun setting it up and moving around the people and lamp posts and little trees. I started making plans for how to improve it for next Christmas. Playing with such things as an adult probably is a great way to be mentally stimulated. I hope that your beautiful dollhouse will bring you both many hours of pleasure and creativity.

  21. You hit the jackpot with John lucky lady! I think it will mean so much more to you now than if you had gotten one as a child. Dreams really do come true, even if they take a bit longer than we hope. It makes them all the sweeter ;)

  22. What a sweet and kind thing for him to do, both the trip to the museum and the dollhouse! I had the same dream as a little girl, reached adulthood and was blessed with five sons😍 I am happy to report I was blessed with my first granddaughter a year ago after two grandsons! I may finally get my wish to get a dollhouse to work on while fulfilling a dream for her!

  23. I am thrilled for you. And, you get to decorate! This is awe inspiring. I am looking forward to the time when I can work on my grandparents' house replica dollhouse. I'm so happy that you found a soul-mate.

  24. I would cry too. How sweet!

This reminds me of re-living that same sort of childhood dream a few years ago when I splurged in Toys R Us and bought a Calico Critters house and some critters etc for the grands ( mostly so that I could play with it ha ha! :)

It was and still is a big hit. When I was a kid, though...we just used our imagination. My Barbies drove around on books. The green book was a sedan, the red book was a convertible, etc.

But oh yes, perusing the Sears Wishbook...I knew that I was quite deprived, ha ha ! :)

  28. Oh Rue, I'm so thrilled for you! Don't let him slip away from you. I had one of the metal ones when I was much younger; but it was as I grew older I found myself mesmerized by anything miniature. I finally bought a wood dollhouse a number of years ago, where everything had to be done with it. I've got the shingles on it, painted the outside and I've run the electric through it. Then life got busy for me, but I still have everything for it and I'm looking forward to keep working on this. It's currently in our guest bedroom.

  29. What a wonderful place to visit first off, I bet someone watched your face looking at the miniatures more than he watched them himself. To want to make a loved one's dreams come true is just lovely. I hope the new house brings you hours of pleasure, Rue.

My dream as a child was to have a big family and lots of dogs!

  33. Very special man you have there, Rue. My daughter inherited a dollhouse built for my aunt by her father my grandfather. It's huge. My daughter doesn't want it. I am trying to figure out where I can put it because it's been in the family all this time and I don't want to let it go. You are going to have so much fun playing with the dollhouse. It's time! Who knows? I might have one to play with, too.

  46. How neat! The last miniature houses I got to see were at the Art Institute in Chicago in the early 1980's. I took as many pictures as I could! The only miniature doll house I had was shared with my sister and it was very small with glow in the dark walls and stickers. Not like these really detailed replica's. Thank You Rue for Sharing and letting me get to see through your sightseeing! Can't wait to see how you decorate your new miniature house! I enjoy your blog! Karyl

  47. Oh Rue, I am beyond happy for you and that John is sure a sweetheart! I would love to go to a museum like that...how fun. I deeply regret not holding onto my small metal dollhouse that I had as a young child. I loved playing with it. As I got older, I would have more fun building houses for my Barbie dolls than actually playing with the dolls. It was all about the houses. :)

    http://ashtreecottagedollhouseminis.blogspot.com/

There are some of the prettiest dollhouse and tiny furniture and accessories on there, and several different ladies, so different styles and colors. I sure enjoyed looking at it all. I'm sure there are probably hundreds of neat dollhouse sites as well to find all kind of pretty things.

  53. Hi, Read this post several days ago --but didn't have time to comment. Wanted to say how happy I am for you. Can't wait to see what you do with your own dollhouse once your Sweetheart makes it for you... That is truly a dream come true to you. What a GREAT GUY you have!!!

I had a dollhouse (of sorts) as a child --in the '40's--- but it was made of metal I think and just a 'cheap' one. However, I did enjoy it.... Every little girl should have a dollhouse sometime in her life.

    Hugs,

  54. How wonderful that John is making your childhood wish come true! I'm looking forward to seeing your new dollhouse finished and decorated. I wanted one of those gorgeous doll houses with the front that swings open too. I actually had one of those metal doll houses as well as a plastic Barbie doll house that opened like a suitcase. I loved the photos of the Gamble House- I went to a wedding at the real one once.

Have fun with your new doll house!
