Ready for their close up

Sorry, I couldn't resist hinting at the Gloria Swanson quote for my post title ;)

Have you seen Sunset Blvd.?

Great movie.

Anyway...

The other day when I posted my hutch, quite a few of you asked about the plates.

Well, they have been on great grandma's hutch since my mom had it in her home and I rarely ever saw her change them out. So when they were passed on to me along with the hutch, I put them right back where they have been most of my life.

Actually since 1979, to be exact.

You can just make them out in this picture of my last house as well.

They're Franklin mint and show the seasons.

January, February, March, April...

May, June, July, August...

September, October, November and December.

Although, they're probably not worth much monetarily, they're priceless to me.

Also up there are some little plates from my dad's mom and some cups and saucers.

Shhh... don't tell the others, but the one below is my favorite of the three ;)

They all live happily on the hutch with a couple tea sets from my great grandmother and a couple pieces of Ironstone :)

And that's where they will most likely reside for the rest of my life and hopefully after that.

I'm kind of a sentimental gal, if you haven't noticed ;)

  1. Yup. I think we've noticed ;).

But one thing you may or may not have noticed about me is I can't keep a secret. I'm telling the other cups they're not your favorite.

I could, however, be convinced to keep my mouth shut if I could get a cool birthday present too (it's in January).

    Just sayin'.

  2. The plates are beautiful and it's so wonderful that they have come through the family, and have such good memories for you! The hutch display is so pretty!

  3. I'm glad you gave us a closeup, Rue. That is just lovely that the hutch and dishes are something passed down to you, and maybe some day to your daughter and her daughter! The tea sets and teacups go so well with them, and your white pumpkins are just right there too.

  7. You are so right. Treasures cannot be measured by what they are worth, but by the memories they share.

  8. Rue, I'm so glad you did a post on your hutch and treasure dishes. My eyes are always drawn to it. I received many special dishes, etc to put in my hutch and curio cabinet ( my sister's ) from my sister, mom, Grandma and great Grandma. In fact I was talking to my mom today looking at my sentimental treasures thinking how much I love my family. Brings me closer to them ( out of state ). I so understand how you feel. Kathleen in Az

  11. How nice to be he 3rd generation to display your grandma's pretty plates in her china cabinet! I've only got a few pieces from my grandmothers, but they are more utilitarian and I use them all the time. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't care to change everything up on a weekly basis!

  12. Oh dear Rue ~ sentimentality is a good thing in this day and age. I love your plates and other treasures in your hutch. It is pieces like these that make us feel good and remember how we got them.

Happy fall and have a great week ~ FlowerLady

  13. I love the dishes. I remember when my Aunt use to collect seasonal dishes when I was little. The hutch is so pretty and I love the carved chairs you have in the dining room.

  14. Now this, is the kind of a "collection" which is simply lovely. Each piece, has its meaning to you. Each piece has a history and is loved and cherished.

I am not a "collection gal." But this, I can understand. Not that it needs my understanding. Just sayin'....... :-)

And of course I have seen "Sunset Blvd." Some haven't???? ,-)

    Gentle Autumn hugs,
    Tessa

  23. Your plates are beautiful. And all the more special because of the sentimental attachment to them. My grandmother had plates of all 50 states hanging in her kitchen. I would have loved to have gotten those from her. And I agree, that blue cup and saucer is gorgeous!

  24. Beautiful plates.

  26. So often during moves one will go missing, so for these to remain intact and together is such a feat. They are absolutely gorgeous and you be as sentimental as you like, nostalgia is always a good thing! xx

  27. They are beautiful and the sentimental aspect makes them even more lovely. I have a few pieces from my grandmother and mother that I too cherish. Hmm...a red wall in your old house, huh? I knew there was a reason we get along so well. ;)

  28. Love those plates and I think it's wonderful that you have them and treasure them. I sometimes wonder about any of my stuff, such as my wedding china and crystal glasses. Will our son (and his wife, if he gets married) want these things? Somehow, I don't think so. You had asked about the two little squirrels in my hutch...I'm ashamed to admit that I got then from umm...Walmart of all places. They're actually a salt and pepper shaker, though I never use them for that. I never (except in this case) buy stuff like this from Walmart - I normally hate cheap, made-in-China stuff like this - but I though these squirrels were so cute.

    1. Oh, I am with you with decorating with family things and then leaving them there forever! Your dishes are so gorgeous and I love that they are the changing seasons. I rarely change up my most precious items. I need to see them every day right where they are. I just have to remember to dust!

Now, the May plate is my favorite (my birthday month hehehe), and December's plate is so wintry and pretty. I can see why that's your favorite tea cup, it's gorgeous. I am a sentimental gal too. : )

  38. Hi Rue!

I love these Franklin Mills plates! The artwork on them is very pastoral and beautiful. Are they purely decorative or can they also be used a dinner plates? I have a large collection of plates that I moved with me from NY. Lots of decorative plates that were popular in the late 870's and 80's. I had them displayed on chair rail shelves all around my dining room in my Brooklyn home and I could not part with them even through the shelves don't fit into this house's dining room I put up a few here and there in my China cabinet and bookcases.

  39. Rue, they are all so beautiful! And I know they are such special, wonderful treasures for you...absolutely priceless! You have some little plates with pink flowers on them...I think I have some that are very similar. When I find the box they are in, I will snap a photo! :-) I think it is so wonderful that you have so many beautiful things passed down from your family...truly fortunate you are!! Hugs!!

  42. Dreamy plates. Oh, so lovely. And perfectly displayed. Okay, I can't think of Sunset Blvd without picturing Carol Burnett spoofing Gloria Swanson. Makes me laugh every time. William Holden is extraordinarily handsome in that movie. He doesn't make me laugh. (sigh)

  45. Beautiful display and so much more special with the family history. (Please write down the history behind your plates & family heirlooms so no one in future generations will forget.) Now that my mother and grandmothers are gone, my siblings are trying to write down from memory the stories behind items for future recipients. All best ~

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
