This and that

I stole borrowed some white roses from my neighbor's rose bush.

They were calling me from my porch.

I'm sure she won't mind.

She only lives there part time and rarely at this time of year, so she usually misses them blooming.

How sad to miss something so beautiful.

As I was getting something to drink yesterday, I realized that I had forgotten to tell you another old-fashioned thing that I do.

I use metal ice cube trays.

Ice makers weren't common in 1950s refrigerators, even though they were invented for them in 1953.

I don't mind :)

I also drink out of Ball jars most of the time.

If I'm not mistaken, I think it's a trend now, but I've been doing it for years.

A few weeks ago at the swap meet, a man gave me some vintage scissors for free, because he was packing up and didn't want whatever was left on his table.

I was thrilled!

I found a couple more 1930s cookbooks and a 1950s barbecue book in an antique shop last weekend too.

I love looking through them and can't wait to use them.

My aprons are at the ready ;)

I also bought a refurbished fan from the 1930s for my bedroom. I want to cool the room off without the standup air conditioner for as long as I can, because it's so ugly and loud.

Pictures coming soon ;)

So, just a bit of this and that today.

I'm looking forward to the weekend, how about you?

xo

PS

Thank you all so much for your support on my last post.

It truly means the world to me :)

  1. Where did you get those ice trays??? I have to use the plastic ones and they're horrid. I don't have an ice maker here and would REALLY like to find some like yours.

    1. Brenda,

I bought them at Amazon. The stainless steel ones like I have are pricey, but they have aluminum ones that are much cheaper. I had to go with the stainless because people kept breaking the other ones, but if you're careful the cheaper ones work just fine. The trick is to let them sit out for a bit. I learned that the hard way when I didn't wait and I sliced my hand open. I suppose if someone grew up having these, they would know better, but they didn't come with directions LOL

  2. The ice trays are classic. Love them. We just started talking about them the other day. I bought a few plastic ones to make fruit ice cubes and told my kids that they stunk. I wish we had the metal ones, like when I was little. Of course, as soon as I say, when I was little, they glaze over. Oh well, they'll see when their lemon ice cubes taste like plastic and take 3 days to freeze up right. Ps. I'm an apron junkie too...but I just like to wear them. I don't want to cook anything! ;)

  5. Unique things, about you! What a wonderful topic, for bloggers.

I am sure I am not alone, in loving to learn more, about blogging friends. It makes them become more 'really friends,' if that makes sense. :-) Same as seeing where they live, and what books they enjoy, and each and every tid-bit, which we care to share with each other.

Thank you for doing this! It is greatly appreciated.

Seems best, if each of us, does/loves/wants/surrounds ourselves with..... What we love. But sad to say, not everyone is brave enough, to do so.

You, doing so... You sharing that you do so... May well be helpful and inspirational, to some timid bloggers. Just another 'plus', to your kind of blogging.

    Merci!!!!

  6. I love older scissors... they last so much longer. I wear a full apron when I cook and when I eat a meal. It saves my shirt if a bit of food happens to fall from my fork. I even bought a full apron for my husband who likes to cook. He was always getting grease or tomato sauce stains on his t-shirts. I was surprised that he actually wears it when cooking or baking.

  7. I love your way of thinking and living Rue....but you can keep those metal ice trays. :)

  8. Rue, oh my gosh, the metal ice cube trays were the best! Why do they always change what's already working? I haven't seen those in so long, and I grew up using them. The white roses are pretty, but I think you know how I felt when I saw the red rose your man gave you. There's simply nothing prettier to me than a single red rose. Jess loves those Ball jars, and do you know they have them all over in different colors now?

  9. I dislike plastic anything in my kitchen and the plastic ice cube trays and salad spinner are about all I have. I don't drink out of Mason jars but have all sizes that I use for so many other things. And those scissors! I grew up using those.

  10. Gorgeous roses! I bet they smell lovely, too! I love all of the vintage touches in your home... I drink from a ball jar, too! && I have my aprons hanging. No fun metal ice trays, though. I love to find things from days gone by.... I think it makes my house cozy, and feel more like my Mama's and Granny's home. I love that. I've recently started collecting pyrex and jadeite. I use them, too! Not just collecting for displaying... I want to be able to use those goodies!

My husband is going to want some of those ice cubes.

  14. Those metal ice cube trays bring back memories that make me smile...it was 3 older sisters and a younger brother in our family...we girls used many more ice cubes than my brother, but we always blamed him if there were no ice cubes in the freezer! I have several cookbooks from the 50's and 60's that I love going through.
    Your home is beautiful, Rue.

  15. Oh my gosh if I had a nickle for every time one of those old metal ice cube trays skinned a knuckle or broke a nail....
I daresay the ice is huge and extra long lasting, but to what cost my ole hands say, haha - I think it's neat you still use them. : - )

Can't wait to see your old fan. We used a very old one with the cloth cord for years when I was little until it sucked up my little sister's and my hair - oh my golly what a big deal that was - it took hours to try to save our hair, ended up having a lot pulled and/or cut - we were just laying there watching cartoons. Yikes. Scared me to death, but funny now remembering it. LOL.

Anyway, glad your hair isn't as long as ours was back then, or I'd be saying DON'T DO IT, RUE!!!!! No cartoons! (jk)

    Hugs.

  16. There is nothing more beautiful, romantic, elegant and cottage looking than roses...
I have a vintage fan (not sure what year it is from) but it needs to be re-wired. Have I ever gotten around to doing that? Of course not. So I use it as decor. But now that I'm reminded, I'm going to put it on my to-do list to take it in.
Metal ice cube trays...I use plastic ones (as much as I hate plastic and have gotten rid of most of it in my house)...I would like to use those SS or aluminum ones, but I have such horrible memories of them from when I was a kid, that I think I'll have to pass on those.
Love where you have your aprons hanging on that wall by the vintage cookbooks. Such a lovely spot! I only have one apron to my name and I never wear it. Yes, I cook. Quite often. But for some reason, I just never wear an apron.
And, yes, I am definitely looking forward to the weekend. We have a wonderful day planned for Saturday! :-)

  17. Those roses....how glorious! Indeed, how sad to miss them blooming and I'm sure your neigbor won't mind if you enjoy them :) My gradma always said the more flowers you pick the more you will get in return when the bloom again the next year.

Such a lovely post, dear Rue. Enjoy the upcoming weekend. Hugs!

  19. Rue, I love those ice trays! I remember those growing up, and can't wait to see your fan. I've been on the lookout for a small one that oscillates but so far only find ones that don't or are waaaaay out of my price range. Such memories.......

  20. My mom has scissors like that, back when she was sewing clothes for us kids. My sister has them now. I do wish I had a window over my kitchen sink. The roses are beautiful, especially the cream bottle. I don't have a chubby one but several sizes from my mom. I think, as I get older, I love having pieces of my past around from family and friends, warm and comforting. Have a delightful weekend Rue, Kathleen in Az

  21. One of the things i loved he most about metal ice cube tray was the sound they made when you pulled the handle up and all the bits of of tiny ice broke. it's what we had, and I have two downstairs that I use. Theres just something about the sound. As a child growing up it's all there was. I don't like using anything plastic!

  22. We had those ice trays when I was a kid! And, my mother always drank her afternoon iced coffee out of a Ball jar. Or a jelly jar. Whatever jar was clean! The kids did the same with their Kool-Aid. I laugh when I remember that every time we broke one she would wail "I can't have anything nice with you kids around!". HA!

  23. I love the sound the ice makes when you pull the handle on the tray...all that crackling! The trick was to see if the ice would come out in one cube...or little pieces. Fond memories! ;)

  24. Oh, those ice trays are wonderful. My ice maker broke years ago (we have hard water, and it breaks appliances), and I use plastic. I swear it leaves a taste in the cubes. Love your finds.

  28. Beautiful roses Rue and the ice trays are awesome. I haven't seen them in ages. I'm not a fan of ice in my drinks, it hurts my teeth, but I would totally fill them up and stick them in the freezer just because. Thanks for sharing.

  34. Beautiful roses! I remember we had ice cube trays just like those. I knew my mother was a really strong woman because she could always pull the lever right out of the freezer, while sometimes I had to run hot water over the tray to be able to pull it up. Thanks for the good memories!

  35. I am an ice tray user also. I got my plastic trays for the dollar store. They don't last long since you have to twist them out but since it's only me, I try too be gentle. I'd prefer ones like you have. I'll keep my eyes open at the Estate Sales. Maybe I'll luck up on some.

  36. Rue! I have that exact same milk bottle bought at a thrift shop somewhere here in Texas, how funny a coincidence is that? Love your pictures and comments. One of my early memories is of a great aunt trying to get cubes out of an ice tray like that and somehow conking me on the head in the process!

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It means so much to me that you took the time and I read each and every one. If you don't have a blog, look for a response under your comment. I try to get to them within a few days :)

For some reason, the comment box doesn't always show up, so if you want to leave a comment, replying to someone else's comment seems to work. Also, I've had to switch from safari to chrome in order to comment on blogger, so that might be the issue. If not, you can always reach me via email, located on my side bar. Thank you!
